Okay, here is what I came up with. Because it was so early in the campaign, I still wanted the new guy tied to the island. So, if you recall the Tump is covered in Fog at the time of arrival.
I came up with the idea that this character actually awoke before the other characters and wandered off into the fog. He headed North (the wrong way). By the time he made the shoreline, the other characters had already had their encounter with the Shadow Goblins and received the message from Huin. They had departed from the stones by the time that he headed back. He camped in the stone circle and received the message from Huin that evening.
He headed off to Bronce but elected to camp outside the town limits. The next day, he found the abandoned buildings outside the mines and was going to use the building as his camp when he spied the party heading into the mines. He noticed the visible birthmarks (with a spot check) that he realized was like his own. He decided to approach the party......
