Dodging beam question.

This came up in a conversation with a player the other night who hasn't played in a long time.

When using a beam weapon, how do you use dodge with the x number of roles one can use with a beam weapon?

I thought if the first roll is made and the ship dodges, thats it. Am I wrong?

Each successful beam strike is its own dodge.

Example: A Minbari Teshlan blasts a Hull 5 White Star with its Neutron Laser, and hits with rolls of 4 and 5. On the sustain roll, it hits once more by rolling 2 and 6. It then misses with a 4.

The White Star now will attempt 3 dodge checks at 4+.

I thought it was one roll for each weapon fired at the dodging ship?

Honestly I think it should be one dodge for each "hit" though. I think that would more accurately display a dodge action, rolling with the hit to take minimal damage or even miraculously escaping all harm with really good rolls.

Actually that makes sense. Why roll on misses when you only have to worry about hits.

If you think about it the beam continually fires, look at the opening of, I think the third season, when the shadow ship fires at the whitestar and it flips and flies downward as the beam follows.

That makes sense now.

Thanks.

Yer we had a thread about this during summer.

One good comparison came up ^^.

Normal weapons are like throwing bricks. You get one shot at hitting and one dodge.

Beams are like using sticks, you get one hit, and as many swipes as possible....

Effectively you roll your attack dice, all beams and rerolls, and then the enemy gets dodges.

(This could otherwise be used in return, CAF rerolls for dodge rolls...)

I must have missed that post. Thanks for straightening me out.

But in your reference you only mention 1 brick. What about a Nova or Lakara? Thats 12+ Bricks. Dodge that!

Yer the post was really in september i think.

And yes Novae and Bimith get lots and lots of brick to throw ^^.

Thats what I'm saying. Dodge 1 brick, not too hard. Trying to dodge 6 bricks, you are probably going to get a scratch or two. 12-16 bricks, thats alot of dodging not to get pulped.

Sorry didn't mean to hijack the beam dodging thread.
