Mongoose
We had an amusing game of ACTA at our club last night. I'd chosen EA Early Years; although we were using counters, I had the same sub-optimal fleet limited by my collection of models which I'm considering as one of the fleets for the Kettering tournament. The other player took Abbai. We both had a horde of fighters; I goofed during the movement and managed to get the dogfight within reach of all his escorts, meaning I lost quite a few to antifighter and some more to my usual dogfight rolling. But it didn't really matter because a nearby Bimith exploded during the attack phase and wiped out all remaining fighters except one Kotha, which had to wait for the next ship to explode before it went.

At one point it looked as though I'd win, then after he'd scored several of lucky criticals (including two 666's on the same ship), we were left with one ship each but his was bigger. I was going to rely on the superior range of some of my weapons, then he declared "All Stop" which gave me the chance to dump troops on his ship, then that gave him the chance to do "All Stop and Pivot" and finish off my ship. All I had now was the troops on his ship, so we let the boarding run to a conclusion. Some 1's meant that a few rounds later I only had one troop left. The troops had also managed some sabotage. The last troop kept going, and with only a few more enemy crew left, was on the verge of victory. Then he got another 6 and destroyed the ship.

End result: total wipeout. No survivors on either side.

Wow. Sounds like a nail-biter. I like the idea of boarding parties accidently blowing up the ship they are on - "what's this button do?". :)

Nice to see the Abbai throwing dice on the table.

still comes down to victory points though doesn't it, common sense says tie, rules say otherwise.
i've lost a battle where i was the only player with a ship on the table at the end, my opponent jumped out, and won on VP's due to the fleet makeups.

Don't think I'd call that a tie... I'd call it a Big Win- For the raiders that stumble upon the debris field.
Minor win for the Raiders - the fact that several ships exploded denies them valuable prizes. Major win for the pak'ma'ra, perhaps.

I didn't think of that at the time, figuring that both sides had lost 5 Skirmish points' worth of ships. However, having now done the sums, I reckon it's still a tie - nobody bought up or down far enough for it to make a difference. And obviously nobody gets the extra points for last man standing because there wasn't anybody left standing. :D

mmmm, curious, but I would argue to hell with the VP and say a tie irrespective. Unless it's a campaign game the fun is more important.

The VP system has always irked me a little. One of my closest battles was against Greg in the dilgar war tourney in Aldershot. It was pretty ding dong and looking at it at the end, a Tie was a fair result. however VP gave me a rather unfair win, i think it ended up as 17-3 to me for the competition. Obviously pleased at beating Greg, who along with Triggy is one of the toughest opponents I have faced (this was before his shadows became dominant), but it just felt a bit wrong and dirty.

Good to see some things have not changed :)

Sounded like a fun game though. Might have to try and get to a club night at some point if I can ever find where I packed my fleets up to. Let you shoot me to death again.
