[CONAN] Exchanging Feats?

I've started using that optional rule where a PC can exchange out one Feat when he goes up a level and is elligible for a new Feat (thus, an old Feat gets changed and a new Feat is gained).

This seems to be working out pretty well.

Are there any problems in the way of unintended consequences that I'm not seeing?

Opinions about this opitional rule, pro or con?

Hmmm, my initial reaction was NO WAY.
But the more I think about it, the more I like it.
As we age, we do learn new skills/ talents and suppress others.
Obviously certain feats should not be exchanged like the Physical based feats: nightvision, improved initiative, cleave, greater cleave, etc.
But certain feats could be: like Brawler and Carouser could be switched out after the young barbarian grows out of his bar-fighting phase.

That was my original hard-assed GM position, too. But, like you, as I thought about it, and thought about the players, it made sense.

I mean, characters only get a few Feats in their entire gaming lives, and as long as you don't break a Feat Chain by replacing a required Feat, then...why not?

It's hard to abuse since it is only possible when the character earns a new Feat. It allows the player to ditch a Feat that he thought he would use a lot but found out that it didn't play the way he thought it would. I don't allow players to ditch Feats that are awarded to the character based on class--they've got to keep those. And, it allows the players to capitalize on Feat choices that they find later in the game (because of unfamiliarity or because of a new supplement with new Feats introduced to the game).

All around, I think it's a pretty good idea. My players certainly like it, and one has already taken advantage of it.
