Combat Manoeuvres

Just need a little clarification on Combat Manoeuvres.

A. I noticed that it is rare that a "regular hit" will ever occur. Given that 1 level of sucess always grants a manoeuvre. The only way I see a 'regular hit' ocuring is if you parry with a weapon that is two sizes smaller.

Am I ready this wrong?

B. In a case where you get 1 level of sucess and select Trip or Disarm as a manoeuvre, do you ALSO roll damage?

C. Can you try a Trip / Disarm or 'Called Shot' (Choose Location) without gaining a level in sucess? Meaning can you call a manoeuvre before attacking and simply resolve the manoeuvre and not a regular random location hit?

I'll try to field these, but be warned, I'm not nearly as familiar with the system as many here.

As far as I understand it, a "regular hit" (i.e., no Combat Maneuver generated) can happen when both the parry and attack rolls are successful. The size of the parrying weapon (and thus, whether the defender takes damage or not) doesn't matter. Since the attack and parry rolls both had the same level of success, no CM is generated. If the parrying weapon is smaller than the attacking weapon, the defender will still take damage, but will not suffer a CM.

From previous answers on this list, I think the answer to this is that you do damage in addition to the effects of the CM.

With the system as written, I would say no, you cannot attempt a specific CM before rolling. I see the CMs as representing openings or opportunities that the character sees and exploits during the exchange of blows/parries. If you don't manage to roll a better level of success, then you just didn't see any openings to exploit. The fact that you get to choose which CM to use, however, means that whenever you do roll better (i.e., see an opening), you can exploit it in any way you choose.
