Has anyone seen or made any flat (not textured) precoloured (sea with wake) pictures to stick on a ship base and then affix a ship model to it ?

Or even have a few top down colour photo links so i can grab and make a picture or two

I have 1/3000 in mind here

Paint em up yerself :)

you could paint up thick card or I can get you some thin metal say 20mm x 100 for the BBs, smaller for the rest ?

Terry, you might give this a try. I cropped it from an overhead shot looking down at the sea. You should be able to resize it for any of your ships. It's probably good that it does not included wakes as they would not match the various hull lines and lengths. You can also add a few brush strokes with a whitewash to give them a stern wash and a few bow waves. It's a compromise that might work for you. I did something similar when I based my 1/2400 collection a few years back. You'll notice that the left end of the water pic is a bit darker, and I would place the bow of the model facing that end. The other end can be used as "busy" water toward the aft end of the model. Oh, I used the darker forward end as a nice contrast for adding white text ship idents.

Thanks Bu, Like the idea of printing on as well

Iirc, I used something like what I just made you above (the jpg above the ships), and I stretched the graphic and clipped off the ends to get the whiter look of those bases. I then added the text and laminated them for protection. Lastly, I cut and glued them to 1mm plasticard and then glued the model to the finished bases.
