If a priest of Orlanth is casting Cloud call and an opposing priest of Yelm is casting cloud clear does the the action resolve in order the spells are cast or should there be some contested roll pitching theology vs Theology.

I assume Cloud Call cancels the use of Sun spear, and should Thunderbolt return, it is cancelled by Cloud Clear.

Another thought, it was mentioned that 'Sever Spirit' was overly powerful, after reading through the Gloranthan Magic it doesn't seem so unbalanced- especially when it should be restricted to lords of the cult.

All very Earthsea... (There's a passage in one of the Le Guin novels describing how contending magicians from nearby islands would cause bad weather to shuffle about looking for somewhere to go).

Humakt got the shaft!

Well, that's how it used to work. You totalled the effects of each spell and the best one.

In RQM, though, it's a bit more complicated as they are all or nothing spells. Opposed Theology rolls would work, though, but in a tie the Orlanthi should win because they did mythologically.

Then again, some Solar cults defeated Storm cults, so perhaps Shargashi should beat general Storm cults but Yelmalio should always lose.

I'd would not say that Orlanth Thunderous worshipers always win or Shargash worshipers should win (I have plenty of Orlanthi myths with Shargash - called Jagrekriand by the Orlanthi - is defeated by Vingkot, the Thunderer, and so on).

...yyyyeeees. But to be honest, rather than being overly nit picky, simply having ties going to Storm is a good rule. With the spell being an absolute rather than the overly nit-picky version of % cloud cover we had in RQ3, its certainly more dramatic. Going to make for intersting weather - the Earth Sea example is well said.

Perhaps good old Heler should get that cloud walking thing going. :D

Think maybe ties should go to who ever top dog in the region it was cast in. If the local myth say the Local solar deity defeated the Storm Gods he wins. If the Myth say the Storm gods won they win ties. Could make+/- based on a ton of things depending on how complicated you want to do it.For example a High Priest of Yelm casting cloud clear atop the Main Yelm temple at Darra Hapa On Yelm's High Holy Day might get a few adds to his die versus a run of the Mill Orlanthi hiding in the slums.

I thought this was the whole point about HeroQuest challenges (hopefully this is Gloranthan "truth" as opposed to the rules of "another game") - that you prove that your version of the myth is better/stronger/more true than your opponents. Where you are isn't so important.

Although obviously having more community support... (definitely veering off into a different mailing list. Sorry.)
