Thought it might be fun to share some of our character backgrounds. One complaint I got from a player was that Wraith characters were too one dimensional, just Video Game Avatars. So I figured we could share what caused our characters to take the wraith path? Maybe help some otehr campaigns get some in depth characters or NPCs
Our game is going to ahve a pool of characters so certain missions can call upon certain skills, and to make deaths a little easier when they happen. Each eprson has a primary and secondary wraith right now
Sgt Skull and The Badger
Tithanarian Shanaloridas joined the military as soon as he could get away from his family. He was born the 4th child of a minor noble Eldarin household. He was always fascinated by meeting non Eldarins and finding out more about their lives and their world. Wanderlust (And the prospect of always living in the shadow of his older siblings) caused him to flee to Dardarrick, and once there to join up with the armed forces where many other fringe living members of his race could be found.
With the normal short sightedness that all military organizations have, his superiors did not see any differences between him and an elf, so he was assigned to a mixed race scouting unit. This lightly armored unit was made up of stealthy folk, rangers, and missile troops. The unit was called the 84th Rangers also called the Dragonflies.
Tith got along with most of the troops, though the Tiefling warlock rubbed him the wrong way. (And not in a good way, she was quite attractive and used those wiles to persuade many of the troopers to give her what ever she wanted. That Tithanarian seemed immune to her considerable charms only deepened the gulf between them. He also found himself secretly repulsed by M187, a warforged trooper assigned to the unit. His skills with a crossbow were considerable as were his abilities to repair weapons between sorties. Something about the soulless eyes of the creature always gave Tithanarian a shudder.
His best friend was a dwarf named Carbuncle Stronghammer whom everyone called “The Badger” due to his uncanny speed at digging, as well as his dogged perseverance in melee. Badgers flailing twin hammers could be heard ringing off the armor and skulls of his enemies, punctuated with robust gleeful laughter and dwarven curses. Badger’s greatest sorrow was that the other troopers were faster than he, and made contact with the enemy first. That and the fact that the elves and crossbowmen amongst the unit killed too many enemies before they closed.
Soon, Tithanarian grew bored with the reconnaissance patrols and foraging missions his unit was sent on. He began to volunteer for night raids and deep reconnaissance missions. His stout friend Badger always was first in line to accompany him. After several successes leading such missions he received a Squad Leader position, which within months became a sergeants rank.
There was much good natured ribbing amongst the troopers of the 84th. They would often call Tithanarian “Isuelda”, after a well known human operatic female character with long flowing golden hair. On a night mission where the warlock Venita was assigned a skirmish broke out when a guard was alerted by one of the troopers falling into a privy. Although she claimed she could not tell where her own troops were, Venita cast a powerful flame spell that caught Tithanarian in its blast. He was downed and almost left for dead. Clerics healed his wounds with minimal scarring but his hair was charred down to the scalp. From that day forth he took to shaving his pate with a small knife each morning. It was badger who noted his pale skin and sunken eyes made him look like a skull at night and the new nickname stuck. Venita was cleared of any blame (not surprising since she was intimately involved with the officer conducting the inquiry!)
A few months later an officer claiming to be from Intelligence Corps came to the 84th. He met with Tithanarian and spoke of good things he saw in the reports that had been sent to him. After confirming that Tithanarian had no romantic liaisons and no real desire to stay connected to his family, the officer made him an offer to join an “Elite Corps” of specially trained troopers specializing in covert missions. Tithanarian leapt at the chance, but respectfully requested that his friend Badger be considered for inclusion as well.
The officer interviewed Badger and discovered he was somewhat of an outsider with the dwarven clan of his birth, opting to join up with an army recruiter instead of working the clan mine as his family had wanted. The Intelligence Officer agreed Badger would make a fine recruit as well.
Soon both were taken away in a closed coach. The officers told the troops it was an internal military matter, and Venita started a nasty rumor that both of them had been arrested for collusion with the enemy and were to be tried and executed, but that it was being kept quiet so as not to disrupt morale.
Although Badger had to learn to fight considerably more quietly, both took to the training well and soon mastered the use of their spellcom lenses. After the initial training phases, Skull was made a squad leader and introduced to his team mates. 12 other Wraith recon troopers who each had specialized skills. He knew from training that they would be called upon in different configurations depending on the mission parameters and needs. They all trained together daily, often playing wargames involving half the squad infiltrating positions guarded by the other half of their squad.
Now their commander, Captain Ibenez has told them that training is over. She has reported that their squadron is ready for field actions. Spellcom is live. Leave no wraith behind, leave no trace, leave no objective unobtained. Wraith Recon HOOO-AH!
