centauri completist fleet

hi

have both centauri fleet boxes

as a completist want to add other ships. Will end up with one if everything in time.

However some ships are liely most effective in pairs, or groups, so seeking advice

past posts suggests many centauri ships outside the fleet boxes have limited usefulness.

Sulst appeas an exception to that statement. How many

Vorchans are one of those ships that is definitely better in squadrons.
All ships are better in squadrons! Name a single ship where 1 is better than 2 or 3?

Vorchans suck. A squadron of Vorchans magnifies the suckiness.

I have had a pretty good returns out of Vorchans. Their main downside is there are plenty of better choices for the FAPs.

Exactly... if 1 Maximus is better than 1 Vorchan, then 6 Maximuses are better than 6 Vorchans. I don't know where this "they work better in packs" thing comes from! It's either totally obvious (ie. 6 Vorchans is better than 1 Vorchan... duh...) or its just wrong.

Sorry burger but thats a bit shortsighted. Sure those 6 Maximus are better armed but 6 Vorchans can get in behind you alot more easily due to their speed. Now 1 Vorchan WONT get there as easily as 1 Maximus as its an easy target but a squadron of either has about the same chance in my oppinion, Maximus takes longer but is tougher, Vorchans die much more easily but can do it in less time. Now 1 Vorchan even if it does get on your tail isnt a big threat, but then neither REALLY is 1 Maximus (not to a larger ship anyway). 3 or 4 Vorchans though CAN pack enough punch to hurt.

I happent to agree that Vorchans at the moment could do with a boost but I DO maintain that they have their uses and depending on the situation and who youre fighting can be VERY useful.

Yep, you really need to work a lot harder to get the return out of the Vorchan compared to say a Maximus. But the Vorchan can give you a much better return in the end.

The work better in packs, basically what is said is if your considering spending FAPs taking the hull, you need to spend a few more FAPs so you have a squadron. One Maximus can function well on it's own. It does not require a pack to support it. However one Vorchan is pretty pants and will die much more easily than 1 maximus, squadroning them allows for better productiviity. You need to invest more to get more out. I think 3 Vorchans will do more for you then 3 Maximus.

I kinda run with Burger on this one, even 6 vorchans is pretty sucky, last time I saw that fielded it had a supporting Secundus and got exactly one victory and that was against me and my brakiri but none of the Vorchans survived and several were fubard in the first 2 turns before being picked off with desultory opportunity fire whilst they struggled to come round for another pass. The Secundus won the day by boarding my Kaliva!! :?

Hang on a minute, Maximus has 2/45 turns too so it can get into the enemy's rear arc just as easily! And its lower speed helps it stay in the rear arc, rather than shooting past...

yes but its lower speed means it takes longer to GET there and takes more fire on the way). And once your IN the rear arc you can just all stop to avoid overshooting. It can be tricky and I'd agree that Maximus are certainly EASIER to user but Vorchans CAN work still.

Demos cant though. They just suck. Alot. :P

Where did the idea that the Maximus is better armed than the Vorchan come from? Maximus has 10AD TL and 4 AD W AF. Vorchan has 8AD TL and 4AD AP DD.

The Vorchan needs a tweak to be effective in 1st ed. From what I've heard about 2nd ed it's going to be a fine ship.

Hull 6 & interceptors are huge when applied to ships with similar hits.
Vorchans still get knocked out by aft & side weapons very easily let alone what half decent fighters will do.
The Maximi are going to stay alive a lot longer and do more damage.
5 Maximi will make where you probably will down to 4 Vorchans maybe even less at the same time.

What's that have to do with the Maximus being better armed? It simply isn't. It's tougher.
It means it fire for longer therefore doing more damage & since more will still be alive doing more damage.
Never said it was better armed but will do more damage because it is tougher.

well actually in a maximus versus vorchan fight the vorchan has some DD weapons that hit the maximus on 5s. they have similar damage.

yes the maximus has interceptors, but you would hope that the twin arrays could lower them. or theres the fact if a vorchan wins init it just outranges the maximus anyway.

vorchans are ok unless you face narn bat squads which have too many ships with beams to avoid them all and more beam dice than anyone else at 5pt raid. but against other races they do fine. my favourite cobinatin for 5 raid usign vorchans is actually 4 solo maximus (for init) and 2 squadrons of 3 vorchans.
