Canada is the 'New Home' of Sci-Fi (love The Shat!)

Contentious statement.....? ;)

Well, for a couple of years it was Australia (Farscape), but:

Canada made more 'spaceship' shows than the US did in the last decade. The US had Enterprise, and then shows like Firefly or lately Defying Gravity that got quickly axed.

Canada made BSG and 3 Stargate shows, plus Lexx and Starhunter, and, I believe, but have not seen, possibly more (?). Caprica is being made there, as was Andromeda, and current genre shows like Fringe or Sanctuary.

Canadian actors have loomed large in tvsf.

Obviously the Shat. And he is a First Class actor, albeit in a class all of his own.

Barry Morse (S:1999), (BSG) Michael Hogan, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Dominic Zamprogna, Ty Olsson, Donnelly Rhodes, Kandyse McClure, Tahmoh Penikett, Aaron Douglas, Colm Feore, Alessandro Juliani, and half the rest of the BSG, the SG cast: Jewel Staite, David Hewlett, Amanda Tapping. And Nathan Fillion, of course. John Barrowman (he counts too ;))

Most importantly...
Canada is the home of Bioware, who make the Mass Effect series, which is one of the best sf rpg settings ever, a creative synthesis of the best gaming bits of other sf, with twists of its own.

So only somewhat tongue in cheek. :)

And really do love The Shat!

This is not the Canada you seek...

<waves hand>

BC is nae bad for pumping out the Sci-Fi (Well Burnaby, but lets not forget Lions Gate Entertainment and EA amongst the others)

Now if we can just survive the Olympics (both "regular" and Paralympics) we'll do fine...

Vancouver gets shows like that because of the cost of production....

Now, if the series was ORIGINALLY started in Canada and then imported into the US or some other market, your statement would be more factually correct.

But since those show's were just SHOT in Canada, it ain't quite true.

You gave us William Shatner... You have a lot to live down... :)

Just SHOT means it is pretty much Canadian - as that's most of the making. Sure, the money and writers, producers may be US (and maybe not), but if most of the cast and all the crew is Canadian, it is a Canadian production. I mean look at Stargate - every planet is the woods outside Vancouver!

OK, Zoic are US, so post-production is American. But like I said, mostly tongue in cheek. The point being that a lot of stuff passed of as American TV is actually more Canadian than US, and a lot of this is genre stuff.

After all, we in the UK regard Doctor Who and Torchwood as Welsh, not English, productions. It pretty much is the BBC in Cardiff.

Lexx was also supposedly a Canada/Germany/UK production, but for the life of me I cannot see where the UK came in... :)

And do not dis The Shat. DO NOT DIS that god of ham, that paragon of chewing scenery, that exemplar of guy-liney staring.

I want to see The Shat and Brian Blessed in the same scene.... :)

Correction...Canada is the new house for Science Fiction (and has been for some time...) it is not a home because we rarely get to see the stuff except on a Speciality Channel that lumps in things like the Home & Gardening Channel and other assorted anti-SF stuff. And, even when you get the wretched thing...there are commercials.**

Also, there is practically no local Science Fiction stories being told. Which when you think of some of the writers we have in this country, it is surprising...also a dearth of good BBC stuff (even the old stuff like Ultraviolet or Starhyke never make it across the pond to us Colonials).

So, we are hardly a home but just an empty structure awaiting love. Hug a Canadian today..they need it. Unless, you happen to an uber SF babe then snogging is perfectly acceptable.

**before you are argue the value of commercials have you ever tried watching Doctor Who or similar program with commercials...it is one thing when you have a Yank program that is run by the commercial break...it is another when you have put up with the drivel when it should not be there. What's more, they are generic commericals...if they were trying to sell me on SF stuff, might be more bearable.

Yep. Eureka was filmed around Vancouver and at some spots on Vancouver Island as well. I really liked that show, does it even still exist?

Yep Eureka is still around on SyFy.

They are between seasons right now, but should start up again this summer.

I used to live near Seattle and I thought several of the outdoor settings looked familiar.
