Because it’s been a while since I’ve seen a battle report, I thought I’d write up the most recent encounter of my raider campaign.
[7pt Skirmish – Annihilation]
[Raiders: 2 Battlewagons, 2 Xixx Torpedo Saucers, 1 Modified Freighter and 1 Vaarl Scout]
[Narn: 1 G’quan and 3 G’Karith]
The local Narn got warning that the raider group was planning a strike on a supply convoy to a minor colony world in the system. They set up a trap to engage the raiders and planned on allowing no survivors. The trap was set near a minor gas giant which generated EM distortions, occasionally making it difficult to track the movement of distant ships. The real hazard in the area was an asteroid field that stretched across most of the center.
[The asteroids covered the center as a 2’ belt at the midpoint of the long edge (black) with some dust clouds (brown) along the Narn deployment edge and another asteroid field in the far corner of the raider deployment edge.]
Prepared for a freighter convoy, the raiders had dispersed on entry. The Battlewagons had come in down-well of the asteroid field and ready to engage the convoy with the Vaarl parallel to the field to keep an eye on the area. The raiders came with their own Freighter to make a quick escape with materials which was escorted by the Xixx up-well of the field. The Narn police force emerged from the low dust cloud instead of the anticipated freighters. Realizing its danger the Vaarl quickly ran for cover up-well of the asteroid belt. The Freighter moved to flee behind the far up-well asteroid field and the Xixx abandoned it to come about the far side of the main field and attempt to catch the Narn in a cross fire. The Narn fleet and the Battlewagons turned toward each other as the mines from all the Narn ships began to light up along the sides of the both wagons.
After a few moments of blistering fire with both wagons focused on one G’Karith, the combined energy mines accomplished almost nothing against the tough wagon hulls. The next moments saw the Frazi launched and engage the wagons as the fleets passed. The first G’Karith was reduced to a burned out hulk and the Xixx began to play peek-a-boo through the asteroid belts near dust cloud. The danse macabre continued as the raiders had difficulty adjusting their sensors to the EM distortions and the energy mines played over the surfaces of the wagons. Slowly the G’Karith and Frazi fell to the combined fire of the Xixx torpedoes and the Battlewagon main lasers as the wagons were whittled down. In the end a lucky blow vented the last of the G’Quan’s crew leaving the ship adrift and the raiders were left to lick their wounds. One of the wagons was so badly damaged that its captain decided to jump back to base for repairs rather then waste time in the field.
[ Final result – it was a complete loss for the Narn. Though the fielding of mine ships meant he had little to fear from the distortion effects or stealth, he focused primarily on the battlewagons which could sustain the damage from the mines. If he had instead closed on the Vree ships first, the outcome could have been vastly different. As it was there was no loss of ships for the raiders except for the one wagon that was returned to command for repairs. I suspect the Narn learned three lessons, first – hold the G’Quan until the battle is a higher PL or he finds the raider base (Three G’Karith and four Ka’Toc would likely have obliterated the raiders). The second stemming from an earlier battle where the raiders were overmatched – have no mercy, for the raiders certainly won’t. The final lesson – never piss off the Dice Gods. We don’t know what he did but you should be able to get more then two or three hits when rolling 80+ dice, even against a hull 6.]
[edit: next time I hope to actually write up something before sleeping on it to get a more detailed description. After 7 days one starts to gloss over details too easily.]
