Here's a couple of books I like & use
a) The Imperial Japanese Navy by John Dull
B0 Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945

both are published by the Naval Institue Press

Hope that helps

If you are willing to do a little bit of searching, you might be able to get a copy of Janes Fighting Ships 1941-1945. I got a copy of it for about $20. You can't beat the info provided.

I'm a little late reading this, but DM has the best answer . Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships 1922-1946 is the most accurate and complete reference that you can get. Jane's reprints are great for looking at, but due to their being "too close" to the time period, they lack in accuracy. Just for fun look in a 1945 Janes regarding the readout on the Yamato and you'll see that they "lost" over 25,000 tons. It's basically the specs on the U.S. Iowa class and an obvious "guess". Even knowing this, I still bought my reprint of the 1945 Janes to see what they sometimes didn't know, but it's still an ok reference. Conway's is very accurate and well researched, and also has quite a few ship's histories included.

Amongst a couple of other books, I have indeed sourced a copy of COnways fighting ships 1922 - 46 for Xmas, and it does indeed seem to be very good. Very similar format to Janes fighting ships
