Privateer Press has some great tutorials on painting under Brushthralls. What you can do is mix in some glaze medium to your base color and lighten it up. The medium will make the paint rather opaque which lets the coat underneath come through. It will also keep the paint moist longer which will allow you to blend the edges. The glaze medium that I use is from Vallejo Paints. I am presently working on a Sharlin using the principles from the tutorials mentioned above. Lots of practice is required and I am far from having enough practice but with patience it is coming together.
I just use 5-6 colours. and build up the layers in quite basic ways. It looks quite cool and is fast to paint (a blessing in my case as I cannot spend hours on my own models).
