Well MTM, for a new poster, you are certainly off to a great start with your creation (and I'm not talking about the Great-Stuff-in-underwear)... :roll:

As a funny thought (one of many for me I'm sadly afraid :roll: ), I suppose I could flip this over and repaint it, right? :lol: :lol: :lol:

It's in S&P 37 Wargamer as a "Home Sweet Home" to the Bugs, but I was only saying it sort of looks like an upside-down atomic mushroom, only it would need repainting... :wink:

As an atomic cloud, I like MTM's a lot better, heh.
 
OMG BuShips! i love that thing, i gotta make one when i get a chance! it looks so realistic. im a wildlife trapper and pest control tech in real life so i see alot of termite and carpernter and colonies and that looks spot on.

for all the tubgirls and lemon parties (if you dont know, dont ask)out there, the internet still proves its worh when you get to exchange ideas like this. i never though posting my nuke would lead me to plan a huge colony/nest. bug central, here i come!

The new Signs & Portents should explain how I made it. It's a two-piece model that each piece can be used separate or together for different appearances. I also made up a second one that fits into one of my lakes that are in my jungle terrain from last month's article. The central nest core of that one is found at craft & floral stores. It is a Lotus Pod, and can be used without any repainting. I did decide however to paint the insides black using acrylic though. As it turns out, I don't recommend the Durham's Water Putty for the recessed Bug Central I made to fit my jungle board as it is too brittle. I'll post a pic of that here too. I must make me several of those "Nuke-shroom Clouds" as I think it was a brilliant idea as a "crowd magnet" for demos :idea: . You said you made it using canned expanding foam, but just how did you pull off blending the large top together without showing the "line" of insulation as it comes from the can? The only thing I can think of at the moment would be to wet my hands with water and compress it down as it cured, as I've done just a bit of that with another project last year. Once again, you did a great job on that and you should be proud. Be sure to tell your kids we all think it's great! I'm glad you posted it.

edit --- pics pulled to make room for more good comments to MTM. Starship Troopers miniatures has to be the only game ever made to deserve a thermonuclear mushroom cloud miniature, and MTM has done a great one! What I'm really saying here is that if any model was ever a signature prop for Starship Troopers, MTM has shown it to us, guys... :D

edited to untangle myself :oops: . MTM, we really need a "blow by blow" (pardon the pun) description of what you did. Did you perchance take any photos as you built it? Also, is the base a 10" diameter to fit the rules? I'm sure you built it that way. The Ajax is what- 14" at the base, as I saw you might make one of those. Take pics, OK? :wink:

Yeah, that's the problem when crowding in on someone else's post :twisted: :lol: , as it was right after my comment while not being a reply :oops: . I originally posted the "devil's tower" as a bit of a sly point that if it was turned upside down, it kinda looks "mushroomy" :wink: . I can't say enough good things about MTM's cloud- it's perfect. The red and yellow give it a nice "glow" of fire and brimstone, and the ring is a great supplementary effect. Now that I've seen it I'm going to have a go at one or two of them like Sgt. Brassones but I'm just afraid what they'll look like 'cuz I'm "blown away" with his (nukes do that, you know). :roll:

It's been awhile since we had some new blood on the forum to bring us something fresh and inspiring. In fact, I was inspired enough to attempt to reverse-engineer how he might have made his cloud. It will be fun to compare notes once MTM brings us pics and construction method. He might be too late for me because mine is well underway :wink: , with my first cloud-top made and painted, and the base made but not finished yet or painted. I also just finished my "ring cloud" a little bit ago. I can't really see how he attached it to the trunk, but two methods spring to mind- wires or something else. I went with "something else" and am using a clear compact disk attached to the main trunk/stalk, with the ring cloud placed on top of it. Part of my cloud collapsed and I lost the nicely uniform shape that MTM achieved, but I can always make a replacement another time. I'm squeezing this in as I construct a bunch of urban structures that I'll show later. I'm sure MTM will answer your question, but as for me I used one can of "Big Gap Filler" in the black can.

While that I hold that it isn't better, it is however a bit different in the final appearance. I like MTM's "rad yellow" look, and well as the shape he was able to form it into. My current version is 22 inches tall, and from using the Tanker as a comparison (good idea, MTM) :idea: it might be a little taller than MTMs. My guess is about 20" :?: As MTM sounds like he is making an Ajax-cloud, my record won't hold too long, heh. I finished this on friday, but my internet has been down since friday morning (sheesh). I did put in a good word with Mongoose for your creation btw, MTM. Oh, this is the second 'shroom button using the red can (regular), although the black label can works about the same.

The second photo picked up a nearby light hitting the underside of the mushroom and gave it a nice "up the kilt" appearance.

It's just part of the "roiling" cloud, and looks better than the pic shows. I made sure it had a tinge of orange as if giving a view into the hotter inner cloud area. Besides, a freckle on a Hollywood starlet gets her more attention you know... :wink:
