Battle Royale

Cosmic Mongoose
I've been glad to find that there's a reasonable amount of interest in ACTA at my local club (have several ex-B5Wars players)....have had several small games with people, up to a standard 5-point raid.

This week was early EA versus a minbari fleet. I made a point of not taking saggitarius or unnecessary numbers of scouts.

The battle went pretty much as scripted in the show:

~Artemis Heavy Frigate explode if any ship with a laser looks at them in a funny way.

~Ships with Railguns have to get within sufficiently close range to fire that ships exploding is a big deal

~My starfuries would have inflicted more damage by throwing judiciously chosen insults at the enemy than they managed with pulse cannons.

Anyway......recently noticed the 'Battle Royale' scenario - I wondered if anyone had tried this? I think it'd be a good idea as it gets everyone interested playing at once...

I imagine we can get maybe 4 or 5 players.....trying to have a think about what to take.

Has anyone tried the scenario - and if so what ships did you field and how did you do?

I'm currently thinking of going with my default Raider Battlewagon (if nothing else, it's a hard raid-level ship to kill if people have a choice of targets...)

I'm just worried because I'm sure someone will bring along a damn white star.

We played it 8-player at one of the Mongoose open days, although with 1 Battle point each instead of Raid. It was quite fun. I took a Tigara and a Leshath, and got ganked by a Primus.

Don't worry about a White Star, someone else will bring a Shadow Scout and the WS will go boom in 5 seconds flat.

Designers of the Liati Advanced cruiser who felt they needed a War-level ship to do this, take note....

played quite a few 4 player games, generally no problems and good fun :) depending on how much time you have to play you should limit fleet points - 5 raid is plenty for this, more can slow games down. Quite simple though, turns in moving, firing etc, just as if you were playing 2 player game

This scenario is a really cool idea but it, unfortunately, is horribly flawed.

When we played it at a Mongoose open day, three players rolled a '6' for objective and immediately formed an alliance...technically they won before any ships had even moved!

We decided to continue but then found that fighter heavy (and also boresight heavy) fleets were absolutely screwed because they moved with the rest of the fleet in an "all in one" movement meaning they would never get to fire on an enemy fleet that beat their initiative. We eventually let fighters move last in turn 3 through unanimous mutual consent (although Reborn, who wasn't playing but was reffing, threatened to "crush us" if we did so ;) )

Saying that, it is a nice idea and with a few tweaks to objective, could be made workable...
