Cosmic Mongoose
ok then, yesterday, taking what we had seen in S+P, we decided to try a 5 point raid game between these two allies of the league, we went for a simple face off, no terrain.

Fleets were Brakiri - 1 Avioki, 1 haltona, 2 Ikorta, 2 Brikorta
Abbai - 1 Lakara, 2 Bimith, 1 milani, 2 Tiraca.

we pretty much used SFOS stats, but then added some numbers for shields, and nerfed the interceptors down. We decided that interceptors would only hit shots that came through the shields. we gave most ships an Af rating of about 2, not that it mattered, we had two of the worst fighters ever known in action!

the fleets started opposite each other. the brakiri had flanking Ikortas and Brikortas, with a Haltona in the centre ahead of the Avioki. the abbai had a very tight formation, flanking bimiths sandwiching a front line of a tirakas, with a Milani behind them, and the lakara at the back. Turn one was pretty much move towards each other, the abbai APTE in an attempt to get in range. a lot of fire exchanged, the Brakiri struggled to take down the abbai shields, but then the haltona and Halik took a Bimith to 1 damage point, with a fine flurry of blows. 4+ beams are fun!. in exchange an Ikorta barely hung onto it's like, it's interceptors overwhelmed by the twin linked arrays on the abbai! turn two saw both fleets central lines clash, the Brakiri outnumbered, the Iks and Briks trying to envolop the Abbai. while the halton and Avioki lined up secondary banks, with no beams available. The Abbai took exception to the Avioki, and began to lob everything into it, combat lasers, particle arrays, frogs, anything... It ended up with speed 2, and no special actions! the secondary weapons on the halik, killed off the Bimith, and begand lowering shields on everything else, the Avioki did likewise. The iks and briks tried their best, but one went pop, and the other was critted into drifting off. It looked bad for the brakiri, 2 rounds of firre had killed a Bimith, and not done much elsewhere, while they had lost one Ikorta and one Brikorta. turn 3, and the avioki nudged forward 2", the Abbai all flitted out of range of it's beam, and the Haltona was caught in a long turn giving it no beam target either, rats. The Tiracas nudged round the back of the Avioki, the Milani moved to flank it, while the remaining bimith skirted round the outside. The Lakaratried to come about but failed, managing to get just into the side arc of the avioki. The fighter battles were resolved this turn, a lone "flamer" left on the field, but the prevalence of guns kept him out of the way. the avioki again cane under a lot of fire, taking it all in it's stride, it got more minus speed crits, meanwhile the Milana was finished off with the combined fire of the Avioki and Haltonas side pulsars. the iks and briks began turning back to battle, hitting a Tiraka in the distance with side arcs. At this stage, things still looked glum for the Brakiri, the abbai were down to minimal shields, ie our random re-charge rate, but the bimith, and lakara were unscathed, the two Tiracas looked in fine fettle too. conversely, the Avioki was left floundering in open space, everything going on behind it, the Ik's And Briks were doing little to dent the shilds/interceptors combo, and the Haltona was possibly about to turn to whap off a beam shot. and it did, the Abbai continued to circle around behind the avioki, the Haltonas long turn brought it's beam in on the lakara, at last, the Brakiri had chance, and they didn't waste it, the beam of the halton ripped into the lakara, it took it's first damage of the game, quite a heftty amount it was critted for 4 speed, the last Brikorta went pop however, while the last Ikorta got behind the lakara and started firing into it. the Avioki took even more damage, an lo, a Tiraka wandered into it's front arc. What do I do? an 8 dice beam on a patrol ship? well thank you sir.. 4+'s all the way, said patrol ship went poof, it's fellow caught in the side arc also went ppof as graviton pulsars ripped into it, suddenly, the Brakiri had a chance, the avioki was still inthe game, but a vital systems crit removed any chance it had of repairing, eep!
the game was drawing to a close, the abbai only had an unscathned bimith and a half damaged Lakara, against an almsot cripple of an Avioki, a Halton and an Ikorta. the Lakare limped forward 4", the Avioki limped forward 2", the Bimith moved up alongside the Lakara, while the halton and ikorta glided slowly behind them, keeping out of range, a full exchange of fire left the Avioki 1 point from a full cripple, the shots at the Abbai were stopped of low powered recharged shields, and interceptors. then it happened, the Brakiri own initiative, they had nowhere to run, the slow milani drifted in front of the avioki, the brakirir player (me) cackled, the bimith moved up to tempt me. the halton and Ikorta closed for the kill. the Brakiri fired first, 8 dice of beam, ripped the lakara open like a melon, it was no more, it ceased to be! with only one Bimith, with a fully charged, 1 point of damage Haltona behind it, and an undamaged Ikorta, the Abbai player realised that while his shots would take out the Avioki, he had little chance of getting any shots on the Haltons and ikorta, as they were both more maneuvreable, and sat on his ass! 2" out of his range. We called it there and then, we didn't even fire off ther last shots, who knows, that Haltona beam could have killed him anyway.

Thoughts. well, we used 4+beams, we used some shields, we dunno the actual mechanics for sure, but it's a simple thing we did. the beams were great, scary as hell for sure! do not sit in front of an Avioki! the Shields were also good, gave the Abbai a different feel, made them annoying, but not really excessive, although if we had left them with full interceptors, they would be far too hard!. For sure we didn't know the full new rule set, but what we used from S+P was pretty cool anyway.
