An Invention: The Kahrari Nomads

Mongoose
While writing a character’s background history, I invented a Shemite nomadic tribe that he had spent some time with. The following is an introduction to the Kahrari. I am a Conan and Howard fan, but I am far from an authority on Hyboria and I would like to put this up for the scrutiny of others to see if there are any inconsistencies with the Hyborian setting.

The Kahrari, a small clan of nomads warriors, much like the larger Shemite Zaugir. The Kahrari are Shemites with a large mix of Kothic blood, some Hykernian, and an original indigenous Pyrrhenian race. They were once more settled, and based around the village stronghold Kahrar, in the northern foothills of the Pyrrhenian Mountains.

Kahrar grew prosperous, its economy based on the large herds of livestock, mostly goats with some sheep and cattle, tended by Kahrari shepherds on the mountainsides. An excess of meat and hides were traded for healthy profit, and Kahrar grew stronger. They had long paid some tribute to Aghrapur, but as Turanian tax collectors became more demanding, and Turanian soldiers spent more time in Kahrar, abusing its populace, rebellion finally erupted. The spark that lit the rebellion came when a Turanian captain ordered a shepherd to give his entire herd to a passing regiment. When the shepherd refused he was crucified, and died watching his grandchildren murdered, and his wives and daughters raped by the soldiers. He was found still alive on the tree he was nailed to, and his story united the Kahrari in vengeance.

After Turanian soldiers were slaughtered and the captain’s head sent East, the Kahrari knew a large Turranian force would be coming. They did not have the manpower to defend Kahrar from the Turnanian army so, stoicly, they abandoned and razed it. Children, women and hillmen took to the mountains with the herds, and the warriors fully embraced the nomadic lifestyle, raiding the western Turranian desert and keeping the army too occupied to threaten their people. The nomadic Kahrari raiders grew in numbers, absorbing other nomads, freed slaves from Turran, and others who opposed the empire. While the Zaugir and most Shemite nomads raid purely for profit, the Kahrari are mostly motivated by their hatred for Turan. When the Turanian Army has captured Kahrari, they have all been put to death, including women, children, and the common folk of the Pyrrhenies. This strengthened Kahrari bloodlust and focused their rage. Honourable warriors Kahrari target the Turanian military more often than settlements and have a somewhat heroic reputation amongst the peoples of empire's western reaches.

I like it. 8) Nice flavour.
Would you also be willing to post some relevant crunch-bits to go along with it? Prestige classes, new feats, anything mechanics-oriented?

Nice! You have a good idea there.

*Sleight of Hand check 25; idea successfully stolen*

*Move Silently check 2; I step in a bear trp!*

:x I need to put ranks in that skill!

Lord Jolly, by all means take the Kahrari for your own games. Consider them open gaming content. I'd be honoured if they, or other creations I post become realities in others' Hyboria.

Sometime within the week I hope to write a recent account of Kahrari history, involving my Darfari character in Evil Treveor's Thalia game - spanning the year before he came to Shadizar. I'll post that too, when it's ready.

Yogah, off the top of my head, no crunch. Unless you need an Enraged Goat-herder prestiege class.

I am certainly not eager to invent new feats. Conan d20 has so many great feats, too many for our limited slots. I am a strong surporter of the idea in the 2nd edition thread that feat progression be increased from 1/3 levels to 1/2. It would make this low-magic, physical game that much more heroic.

hmmn, perhaps a combat manouver ...

I have this image of my character, a freed Darfari slave/gladiator, no mounted combat skills adapting to Nomad raider life. He took a couple ranks of ride in that year, but was still an up-close and personal brawler. In at least a few fights he took to jumping from his saddle to tackle opponents and dissmounting them as he dragged them to the earth.

Before a 'from horseback' flying tackle, perhaps a ground based flying tackle combat manouver could be designed.

Or is that already covered in the rules? I am really just a rules noob.

Again, I agree. Too many feats, so few levels...
I know: we'll balance things out by saying that you get 1/2 and every other feat (or somesuch) has restrictions, say, you can only use it once per session (or it has to be a basic, no-prereq feat).
AFAIK, these such feats from the Atlantean Edition would be

Acrobatic
Agile
Alertness
Animal Affinity
Armour Proficiency (light)
Athletic
Blind-Fight
Brawl
Combat Reflexes
Deceitful
Deft Hands
Diligent
Endurance
Fleet-Footed
Greater Fortitude
Improved Initiative
Improved Unarmed Strike
Investigator
Iron Will
Lightning
Martial Weapon Proficiency
Negotiator
Nimble Fingers
Persuasive
Point Blank Shot
Run
Self-Sufficient
Shield Proficiency
Simple Weapon Proficiency
Skill Focus
Stealthy
Toughness
Track

Just some brainstorming. :D
What I do to reward the players, instead of gold and treasure-items, is to award them mechanics-related advantages as more Fate Points or an extra feat (provided that they already meet the prereqs). They seem to like it.
Since we're on the topic of feats, I'm preparing a detailed feat tree to analyze the mass of feats from most if not all of the books thus far, I'll put it up in the next week when its closer to done.

Reading both Shem and Road of kings on this region (the Pyrrhenian mountains) does give a feel for an area full of conflict. With the Shemitsh city of baalur somewhere in the south-western foothills. To the north lies Khauran still ruled by a now aging Queen Taramis.

The Oasis of Akrel, which is physicaly located at the most northern tip of the range, where in past times Conan hid a small force of rebels and bandits with which he overcame the witch known as Salome and freed and restored to her throne Queen Taramis. This tiny place is claimed by Khauran, Shem and Turan.

The shemitsh city of Baalur is also linked with the mighty Aquilonian king, as it's rulers are aged and their only daughter is believed to be not the daughter of the king but of Conan! Should the existing Rulers pass away, would the Princess call upon Conan to aid her secure the throne ? and call upon the Kahrari to aid her ?

Since the witch Salome was a sister to the now aging Queen Taramis, and the dynastey is cursed, even now somewhere there could be a new Salome gathering her forces ! When the old Queen passes she has no direct descendants and more distant members of the Ashkaurian dynasty will perhaps seize the opportunity throwing this region into chaos.

The area isn't directly mentioned in 'Ruins' but perhaps somewhere in those hills or the deserts east and south of it who knows ?

Heh Queen Taramis was Slain by Dagon or Dagoth in the Motion Picture Conan the Destroyer with Ahnuld. Silly.
Of course very little of the motion Pictures had sway in Mongoose just giveing Evil_Trevor a razz.

Sounds like an interesting Culture.

Tofu, consider me razzed, The nomads need to be aware of the oasis and the politics that surround it and also have to have some attidude to the shemites living in Baalur since they have the best part of 1000 troops. Many older members may remember Conan and his large force at the oasis and some may have joined it !
