Alternative campaign ideas for Traveller

Hopeless

Mongoose
Reading the thread regarding traveller the movie as a campaign idea I was wondering what ideas you'd come up with a campaign concept not just limited to Traveller history.

For example say we have five inhabited systems, the first we'll base on the Sol system and Earth known as Earthers who are depicted as somewhat arrogant and old fashioned with a little too much political infighting to keep its hold over the other colonised systems.

The second we'll call Cambion named after a story of a half devil-human fiend, it was settled by largely miners who had to spend quite a few generations terraforming their world before they could walk outside the domed cities without a respirator or vacc suit. Embittered because there nearest neighbouring system Ithikia is a farmer's paradise and had its own orbital habitats so it could avoid spoiling its home with industrialised mining.

Now Ithikia is a little behind the others systems tech wise until a brief period before this campaign idea actually starts, but I'll get back to that in a minute.

The fourth is Luminous which is so named because of a silver sheen to the edge of the its upper atmosphere and like Cambion spent a few generations terraforming it into a suitable inhabitable environment for its colonists.

The fifth are called the Ather and are a space faring race with noinhabitable world of their own and are the most advanced tech wise but suffer from a genetic problem that was made worse by a growing xenophobic reaction to inhabitants of the other systems.

Approximately 30 years prior to the campaign start a hybrid member of the Atherian race left his mother''s people due to the hostilities shown to the mixed race child in a society that hated such diversity. It made matters worse that he was a polymath who erased much of his inventions before he left rather than risk them being used to go after him.

He ended up travelling to Cambion and upgraded their technological capabilities until they discovered his true nationality and he fled the system with his daughter seeking safety on the Ithikian homeworld where he helped upgrade their tech to defend itself against the growing menace of Cambion whose power he had inadvertedly helped accelerate.

War broke out during which he was killed and his daughter joined the Ithikian military ending up fighting ina war that lasted until Luminous joined the fight which caused it to end in a truce with Luminous enforcing a treaty creating the Alliance of Three Worlds.

The Ather became involved as mercenaries during that conflict desperately seeking the missing hybrid because of the technical knowledge he possessed the reason for which is a plot point for during the game.

Now the game starts with the characters on Ithikia, its still a largely farming world with some cities to cope with the advances in tech but little or no industrial factories are present since they're overly careful against pollution which is why humanity left the sol system to colonise other worlds in the first place.

A sudden noise catches everyone's attention towards the sky as a series of what looks like flaming streaks in the sky come tumbling down and hit somewhere close by sending immense dust storms hurtling through the streets!

Alarms blare as sirens call for people to head to the nearest shelter often to underground train stations as the military start moving out their forces in response even as those in the spaceports and military bases are trying desperately to find out whats happened.

There's a series of massive explosions as the dust storms persist forcing people to take shelter as sounds of fighting reach their hearing as those underground find themselves caught in a devastating ambush as armoured insect-like mechs storm through the underground passages killing anyone they meet!

Matters aren't better outside the cities and towns as the military engage more of these mechs as visibility gets worse due to a continuing dust storm spreading out from various parts of the planet.

I picture this along the lines of a Battlestar Galactica reimagined series except sort of seeing it from the ground as the cylons first arrive and unlike that idiotic series premise they don't nuke the world below they're taking hold and rendering it almost impossible for the inhabitants to survive.

The dust storms are former by the building of immesne factories designed to produce the robotic mechs controlled form orbital battleships that have been taken over by Cambionites and aided by Luminousians who see this as a perfect means of securing their future with a planetary sized robot mech factory covered by a fake natural catastrophe eliminating any ships trying to escape and insuring the few remaining offworld Ikithikians can't do anything to intercede.

The players on the world below have to cope with a gradually worsening conditions what with depleting food and water, enemies literally everywhere and no means of communicating offworld with even contact with other parts of the world very limited.

And the worst part is that their high tech implants say implants designed for wireless communication has literally turned them into living beacons for the robots to track down and kill...

Well I'll stop there and see what you think?

Alternate Traveller Universes (ATUs) and Your Traveller Universe (YTU) or My Traveller Universe (MTU) are wonderful and was how the game started out all those years ago. The original Classic Traveller didn't have a setting for the first few years.

One of my small settings was a Binary star system with 3 habitable planets (2 were terraformed in the past) and lots of colonies and outposts on all the other moons and planets and belts. LOTS of different societies and governments and 2 different races.

After over a year of campaigning in this setting, I let the players find an abandoned starship in a highly elliptical orbit that had an FTL drive (Jump Drive). They used it to leave the system and suddenly discovered they were in a much bigger universe with interstellar empires etc. NOTHING in common with the OTU except the rules.

I wish more people would post their personal settings.

Thanks for sharing.

My personal setting which I have been developing alot (mostly on my own, but with some games), is a 4 system grouping. It is two governments, one of two worlds and one of one, with one of the planets having been in conflict for the last decade or so.

One government (a democratic empire) is relatively free, and consists of two worlds main, one well inhabited and the other more of a military outpost and training facility than an actual colony. This is also where most of its ships are built

The other is a monarchy, and is reasonably fascist. One world, with another contested. Its not doing very well, both militarily and in its economy. The government isn't very popular, but is having a resugence.

Both are at high level TL 9. Jump 1 only. Plasma weapons are vehicle mounted only. Combat armour is in its infancy, with only prototypes out at the moment. A little piracy on both sides (mostly privateers).

It turns out the democratic empire is in fact the bad team, as it were. Lots of limiting of personal freedom, some kidnappings for experimentation, that sort of thing. Like the above, I was eventually going to allow the discovery of a larger jump engine which would allow, if they tried hard enough, for someone to go out and find a nearby star empire. (about 4 parsecs away i think)
