Allocation of Damage Dice and word "nearest"

The rules say the firer rolls his damage dice (DD) and they are then allocated with the highest die being allocated to "the nearest" model in the firezone.

Nearest to what? The firing unit or the target point (i.e. the point from which the fire zone is measured).

We assumed it was nearest to the firing unit. Was that wrong?

Your correct, nearest to the firing unit.

I concur with Old Soldier. Nearest to the firing unit should be used. A good example is on one of the pdf files for the Advanced Rulebook. 3rd page of the 1st pdf as shown here. It shows pic by pic the allocation and removal of models from a fire action which clearly shows the models closest the firing unit being allocated DD.
