okay, maybe I don't get it cos I haven't played much D20, BUT:

if I change from a Wanderer to say a Searcher as soon as my character meets the requirements for the new class, do I go back to being a 1st level character while losing all my former class abilities?

It isn't quite explained...well I didn't think it was.

You add the new statistics to your other levels...they all stack and you keep all of your feats, skills, and special abilities from the base class.
