anyone put one of these beast together yet? and if so how did you get the side fins to stay on the centarl part? i have tried pinning but would need almost an axle all the way thru to keep them on due to the weight. any other ideas?

Actually thats not a bad idea Hiff (sort of)

You could try soldering them together. Failing that, pinning and putty. And make LOTS of supergiue (and give it LOTS AND LOTS of time to set ;))

Does soldering work on minis? Since they are lead-based, I can kinda believe it. Can a soldering iron get a mini hot enough to join it?

think its more the case of you have to be quick when soldering as minis melt very quick if i remember rightly fom people who have done it. the prob with the adira is theres only one place the wings join to the centre bit and that place isnt very large. trying bigger pins that go alot deeper at the moment.

DON'T SOLDER MINIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pewter / Lead minis will melt under the heat of a Soldering Iron, destroying any detail in the area!

detail?? this is an armageddon ship you know.

ok its done, need huge pins that go very deep. but wow this thing is heavy, and far too big. leaving it to set now, hopefully will work out then can get to painting it.

I tried using a solding iron on an old GW Dread that kept falling apart.

Any detail within .5 inch (1.3 cm) radius of the iron's tip ran like water. And that was just with a quick touch to join 2 pieces, I shudder to think of what could have happened if it stayed on longer.

Would make cool burn damaged though!

I did not actually mean melt the mini with the soldering iron

I MEANT use molten solder (the little silvery wire stuff you use WITH the iron) instead of (or better still as WELL as glue).

Ideally you drill some small holes with a pin vice on opposite each other and drip a tiny alittle bit of solder into them then press together. Hey presto super strength pinning.

Havent actually tired this but I might sometime ;)

not if you just stick them together but if you do it with the holes you get essentially metal pegs that are jammed into perfectly form fitting holes, and if you supergule it too then.... my cunning plan is complete :P

Im not sure drazi would go for that sounds too complex. They probably just hit them until they looked about right.

Or headbutt each other till they THOUGHT theyd finished gluing their ships togetther :P

solder is a mixture of lead and tin, not a very strong combination, considering the weight of the minis involved. A sturdy pin is probably the best option.

Once you have got this beast together how are you going to base it ? if it is so heavy. I would be interested to know for any future projects of my own.

Thanks

Martin

The problem with whitemetal is that it conducts heat rather will so even if you think you are heating a small part, once it is hot enough to melt a larger area will melt. And you have to get it very hot for the solder to stick properly. A friend tried it and eventually gave up on soldering larger metal minis. Pinning and LOTS of superglue is a better way to go. Also, I have learned that mixing a bit of white glue with the superglue will make it set quicker, at least for small parts.

Cyanoactivator! This stuff is fabulous, you prep your mini (especially the Adira), pins ready, etc. Put superglue on 1 side and spray Activator on the other, as soon as they touch, it bonds instantly! No more sitting holding the model for ages only for it to fall apart anyways.
The Adira really is a challenge to build though, mine almost made it into orbit at least twice, before it was complete..
