About planets?

Ok, just played a game of ACTA and I'm still getting to grips with certain rules. In this game we ended up with an interesting question. While using the orbiting rule in regards to planets one of the players wished to use the 'ALL STOP' SA. This then sparked a debate about whether or not you can actually perform an all stop while orbiting.

In the logical way of thinking all ships would be equiped with thrusters that allow them to stop and counter a planets gravity. But this isn't actual physics, its gaming!!!

Can anyone give me advice on how I could help resolve such a problem in future. It really held up the game in many regards because we were all just trying to understand the rules (oh you can so tell I'm a newbie lol).

Never be ashamed of being a newbie. Newbies that keep popping up in these forums means that the ACtA gaming community continues to grow, which is a good thing!

I don't have access to 2nd Ed rules right now, but I do have some SFoS stuff to quote. Now, unless its changed since SFoS, using All Stop means the ship may move between 0 and half its speed. While in a gravity well (orbiting), you can use All Stop as well as another special action.

Also, if you look at the rules for planetary assault, they also state that a ship can only attack emplacements if it is half the distance of the gravity well and either orbiting or holding position, using the "All Stop" SA.

So, yes, you can use the All Stop special action while in a gravity well.

I rarely ever play with planets, its a scale thing, I think a 2 inch planet is just silly when weapons are firing 30 inches. Sorry, the weapons just DON'T have that sort of range. So, I don't have much experiance with gravity wells or planets.

There is nothing to stop you using all stop while on orbit.

In future if you have any rules debates that you can't agree on roll a dice. And sort it out in more detail after the game. :)

I like the "my hammer beats your opinion" method, but whatever works to keep the game going.

Of course, he did say 'debate' rather than argument, so it sounds like all involved were good natured about it

Yeah it was more a debate than anything else, we're all pretty mild mannered but it was a little frustrating lol. I actually said to the guys I'd pop on here and ask so we could get a good consensus about the rule :)

Thanks for making a newbie to the game welcome though, seriously its nice to know I can just pop on here and ask away :)

Narn Bat Squad is gone from Wikipedia?

I guess you're even safe from the Narn Bat Squad, then, cadno ap annwn. Good time to join in.

Here's the original article:
http://www.jmsnews.com/msg.aspx?id=1-14497

The original Narn Bat Squad appears to have been eliminated. I want five volunteer Narns right now. You, you, you, you in the back and you. Step forward. Collect these baseball bats.

Now for your training. On the sound of the whistle, you will charge forward and assault that training dummy with the bats. Got that? Right.

<wheet!>
tramptramptrampTrampTrampTRAMPTRAMPTRAMP.....

WHAM!WHAM!WHAM!WHAM!WHAM!WHAM!
OUCH!OUCH!OUCH!OUCH!OUCH!OUCH!

I said attack that training dummy! Not me!
ZAP!ZAP!ZAP!ZAP!ZAP!

Baseball bats are no match for a good PPG. OK, I need another five volunteer Narns...
