A puzzling announcement, but one nevertheless likely to be of interest here...

I am "on" the Baen Books discussion forums. They have a section/conference/ newsgroup/area set aside specifically for announcing Electronic Advance Reader Copies ("eARCs") of forthcoming titles.

Today, 4 August 2020, in that area, I found the following:

Hi folks,

Marc Miller's Agent of the Imperium is now available as an eARC. Get your copy here: https://www.baen.com/agent-of-the-imperium-earc.html

Enjoy!

I say "puzzling" in the title because I have a copy (two, actually) of Agent of the Imperium (trade paper) from 2015, and I've seen it on Amazon for Kindle almost that long...

Probably just a promotional announcement for the new printing with updated cover art. Also, was the first edition published by Baen? If not, publishing with a reputable sci-fi publisher like Baen could do wonders for the book.

No, the previous publication was under FFE's own imprint; I do agree that a republishing under the Baen imprint won't hurt.

New printing is all. Just like with any sci-fi novel.

Ok I finally clicked the link.

TO SAVE THE GALAXY, A DEAD HERO MUST RISE AGAIN! NEWLY REVISED AND EXPANDED NOVEL SET IN THE TRAVELLER UNIVERSE FROM LEGENDARY GAME DESIGNER MARC MILLER
Newly revised and expanded - does that mean new stuff?

What are these revisions and expansion?

Do I have to buy yet another copy despite kickstarting the original book at the highest level to get the latest text?

Probably; Baen was not involved in the original kickstart/publication. If you have the relevant information, you might want to write to Marc and to Toni Weisskopf (Baen Boss) and inquire; Toni is quite reasonable, and pro-fan (within reasonable limits - she can't and won't let her pro-fan attitude extend to doing serious damage to the brand or the economics), and while I can make no commitment on her behalf, I would not find it surprising if some sort of consideration were extended. However, you should know that it is also equally likely that it wouldn't happen; Baen has put out second editions as separate purchases, where the second edition is distinguished by the addition of significant prefatory and/or afterword material. (This is sometimes but not necessarily always accompanied by the first edition going into the Free Library, where you may download it and keep a copy forever at no charge beyond your time and what your ISP charges for net.access/downloads.)

BLATANT PLUG:

I strongly urge people to keep Baen in mind when seeking new SF books; Baen publishes SF without considering the author's politics, only the quality of the writing.

Additionally, Baen does not assume that you are a criminal; all of their titles are published without encumbrances that limit you to specific devices or formats. All newly-published titles are available in HTML, Microsoft RTF, Kindle/Mobi, and ePub formats (there may be others - but PDF is not one of them), and purchasing a title from Baen gets you access to all of the available formats, so that if you change devices or platforms, you don't have to repurchase the title. Additionally, if a title is withdrawn from publication after you have purchased it, your ability to download it - in any of its Baen-published formats - will remain in most cases (there have been a couple of instances where the revocation/reversion of rights resulted in the necessity for withdrawing even the ability to re-download purchased books. This has been quite rare).

PRICES ARE SENSIBLE - unlike other publishers (including other branches of Baen's parent, Simon and Schuster), Baen does not charge print-edition prices for e-ditions. If the print edition is currently in hardcover, the e-dition will be $9.99; if the current print edition is Trade Paperback, the current e-dition price will be $7.99, and if the current print edition is Mass Market Paperback, the current e-dition will be $6.99.

END BLATANT PLUG

I hope it isn't a revised "cut down" reprint of the original book. Just from the size of the book your loosing sixteen pages from original (304pg) to this book (288pg).

Agreed, but note also that that difference is actually small enough that it could arise from minor format changes, such as font choice, margin settings, et cetera. Another possibility is that the "library data" that starts on p278 in the original FFE TPB was deemed of no or limited interest to the general (non-Traveller-fan) reader, and excised or reduced.

(If you're willing to spend the extra money on the announced eARC, rather than waiting for the final release, you can easily find out... I don't advocate either decision on purchase; some people like the early access, and don't mind the warts; others are only interested in finished product. What works for me may not be to your taste. Offer not valid in all jurisdictions. Your mileage may vary. Package may not appear full due to product settling during shipping. Opinions expressed are those of the poster, and should not be assumed to reflect the opinion of any other entity.)
