A Doctor Who/Torchwood RPG [what kind of rules?]

Lets look at the major problems in a Doctor Who RPG.

A) You need a way to let characters of vastly different abilities shine together. The Doctor, Romanna, K-9, Kamleon, Frobusher, and Captain Jack are superhuman. Leela, the Brig, Jamie, Ace, and Leela, are skilled warriors. Sarah Jane is a brillant detective, far better than the Doctor. Zoe, Adric, Nyssa, and Liz Shaw, are geniuses. Barbara, Jo, Rose, Ace, and Sara Jane, have great gifts of the spirit. You need a system that balances power levels.

B) You need to cover multiple different technological levels, social structures, and millues.

C) You need to define the spiritual as well as the mental and physical gifts of the characters to match the themes of the show.

A) Would best be handled by a Drama or Fate points system. The Hawkmoon system has one of these. However White Wolf's "Adventure!" and Eden Game Studio's Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel and Army of Darkness games have more flexible cinematic versions of the same mechanic.


C) I think we'll need at least nine stats.

Physical Strength, Dexterity, Stamina

Mental Intellect, Wits, Perception

Spiritual Will, Empathy, Soul



The Physical stats are easy enough. Intellect is a standard brains stat. Perception is an awareness stat. Wits is a think fast, social awarness, ect, stat. Will covers resolve, detication, determination, willpower. Empathy is conection to others, understanding, sympathy. Soul covers integrety, coposure, passion, and other qualities of spirit.

I know some of this sounds hokey. But Doctor Who is often Hokey in a profoundly beautiful way. If the game doesn't reflect that, why bother?

There already is a company producing a Doctor Who RPG> The company is named Cubicle7. It's not going to be a Mongoose product!
