2nd Edition? Two books, no more a box?

Mongoose
Hi.

Have been busy elsewhere for a while and come back right in time to see the impending release of 2nd edition ACTA. But what do I have to see? Two more rule-fleet-books? No neat box including all the stuff needed to play? I want to have another boxed set, including counters, dice, measuring aid, and all the rules needed to play...but that won't happen, will it?

Or am I just blind...?

No, it won't happen. 2e is just 2 books. The counters are now photocopy or cut-out-and-keep pages at the back, the dice don't exist and the measuring aids are made by a different company.

I guess the box is pointless, since ACTA will always only require 2 books, not like the current 6 books to have all the stats! Counters, well I guess it is cheaper and because the printing is now done in Mongoose's offices they might not have thick card printing facilities.

I see. So my two packs of colour, thick paper 1st edition counters are priceless possessions right now, eh? :)

Are they including counters with the books? I was under the impression they were going to do a seperate counter set, like they did for SFOS.

Yep  And your priceless book carrying box, too, I'll still be using mine, it is very useful.

AFAIK counters are included with the books but they are printed onto standard pages, not cardboard press-outs.

They are planning a separate counter set. There will be some ship counters in the back of the rule book to cover the ships that are in there. The rule book contains the stats for half a dozen ships of each of the the big 4 races to get you started.

What I'm concerned about is now there is a separate fleet book that is sold alone, and how unkosher that will make online fleet/ship viewers.

Well, unless the Fleet book also comes with nice little ship cards (a la Federation Commander) or record sheets (a la Battletech) so you can actually use it in play, I don't see the online elements becoming un-kosher. Record sheets of some kind are a basic necessity for a game of this type. ACTA/VAS is one of the few such games I can think of that doesn't provide even photocopiable examples. (FedCom/SFB/GWaS/WSIM/Warmachine/Battletech/BEvo).

Now if Mongoose starts coming out with those, then maybe.

I'd like to know what the Mongoose guys use for record sheets when they play the game.

In my experience, Mongoose has been OK with the shipviewers so long as we don;t include rules on them. If that changes, well, all bets are off.

they do provide a photocopy-able blank sheet in the soft cover books, its just very user un-friendly. I played my first game with them and it took an hour just to write all the weapons down...

Of course if asked not to publish the stats from the fleet book, then I won't. But really I don't see it costing Mongoose many, if any, sales... the number of people using it, or rather the number of people who use it instead of buying a book, is so minutely small compared to the number of ACTA players worldwide, that it wouldn't even make a dent.
