We will see how things go at higher levels and perhaos we will reconsider. The players are averaging about 4th level.
You are correct that some encounters may go flat if a powerful creature rolls low on its DV but I don't think its is very unrealistic. (Which I know you did not say or imply)...
I just finished this book and would recommend it to anyone who would like some inspiring backstory to utilize for the Giant Kings, the Sorcerors of Acheron and Stygian nobility.
How the author draws evidence of this pre-himan race makes me wonder what books Howard read that inspired him because...
It wasn't my intention to malign the game. I love it. I guess I should have said lack of a parrying option was my only real complaint.
Yeah, I gave the book a read a few hundred times over and saw the defensive rules and feats you mentioned and they are used in our group as much as any other...
Not to mention a powerful Sorceror would mop up if he did not provoke AOO's and had the "Rule of Success" on his side.

I piscked up the book today after work and about 70 pages into it.
All ready it has illuminated my perspective of the Giant-Kings, Acheronian, and the nobility of Old Stygia.
Not to mention the way these legends seem to have inspired Howard's writings in particullar "The...

I have been researching the web and on Amazon for books on the Nephilim or the Ahuras or the Dragon Kings of Persia.
That vague passage in Genesis right befiore the flood always facinated me and I recently discovered what the book of Enoch is.
I have found a few interesting books...
We instituted a house rule in a campaign I am currently running where you rolled for your parry or dodge value rather than having a static number modified by certain intangibles.
Basically instead of adding the bonus to a base of 10 a d20 is rolled and the bonus is added to it.
I proposed this...
