Well we can make detectors that can detect gravity waves now and we are no where even remotely close to making artificial gravity. So, I am guessing when we get the super duper science to make gravity drives, then detecting them will be a few orders of magnitude easier.

I think the problem is that the writers are using displacement tons and tons interchangeably. Sadly, there is no easy fix for this that doesn't break something else. So, we just have to run with it. So, even if you have a far trader that has the room to fit 200 tons of tungsten engine blocks...
