(2300AD) The Invasion campaign is here!

That's NPC morale. That's a fine. The morale system we are talking about is having the dice tell the players when their PC's morale breaks.

    This one? :D

Side arguments about Mongoose' morale rules aside, it's a very promising start. Much more interesting than I expected.

Character mental state and all that is absolutely a good thing to have as food for thought. Players should be considering that and I often ask questions about their characters' reactions to things to help keep them thinking about more than just number crunching. But there is no circumstance...

There are games that use a morale or stress mechanic, but it properly designed as a tool for the players. Like you have a stress meter, you know what's going to cause or risk more stress, what will relieve it, what kinds of fun things will happen if you push it too far. You are giving the...

oh yeah, it is the same. I just ignored it in the companion, too, like the Luck and other optional stats. I hadn't realized that the entry in Invasion was a copy/paste of those rules. Still bad, though :D

You can build good games around mechanics that limit player control of their characters. Pendragon does this, many horror games do this. But the good ones have robust mechanics around this and they are central to how the game is played. Neither of those things describe the morale appendage in...

This. There are a lot better stress rules out there these days than Morale or SAN checks, IMHO. I prefer mechanisms that lead to the player making appropriate decisions to mechanisms that tell the player what their character does.

I did not diss military adventures or call for them not to be published. I said that I bounced off 2300 back in the day because the marketing that I encountered made it seem like that's all it did, because the ads were heavily about Invasion and the buzz was about its tie to Twilight 2000. I am...

OR.... veterans were a large slice of their audience because they made all their RPGs into wargames so folks who weren't into military sci fi didn't stick around. Who can say? No one I know ever used a Mercenary ticket or found the 5FW or the Rebellion fun to play as a RPG. We all played...

Feel free to use it then. I don't find any of those mechanics particularly interesting. I prefer to make the Kafers so scary that my players choose to have their characters run away than go "eh, Joe, you are out of the combat because you rolled snake eyes. Wanna pick up the pizza? It should...

(2300AD) The Invasion campaign is here!

The things I like about 2300 are the detailed worlds that are not all happy ducky and travel friendly, the industrial design of the starships, and the emphasis on surface orbit interface operations. The things I don't like about 2300 are the way it felt like part of GDW's obsession with...

(2300AD) The Invasion campaign is here!

Players are rarely inclined to accept any threat as existential unless everyone's set down to play a horror game. But I just generally prefer to demonstrate that the monsters are that bad over having a "roll dice to avoid losing control of your character's decisions" mechanic. And I think the...

(2300AD) The Invasion campaign is here!

I agree about the morale as applied to PCs and the package skills for "campaign points" systems. I'll give them more thought, but neither feels right to me at first glance. I don't have any loyalty to the original version so most of the rest of those negatives don't hit me. I didn't get any...

Armies of the Fifth Frontier War - Coming Tomorrow!

I would assume because a goodly number of people consider the PDF to be the product. It's not an addendum to the physical book. So selling them an incomplete product would be problematic.
