Strange Aspect of Conan in Howard's writings

Your description is EXACTLY why I am so harsh about pastiches.

    [CONAN] Legends of Kern

Yes, the "sharp and direct" fragment bothers me, on four levels. 1) It is not a sentence. There is no subject and no verb. Merely two adjectives (modifying nothing) joined with a conjunction. 2) It is an unnecessary fragment. Presuming the adjectives are meant to modify the preceding...

    [CONAN] Legends of Kern

I opened the book to a random page (page 35). "On the door to the hut belonging to Gar and Fionna, a bloody swipe." That was the first sentence I looked at. Incomplete it is. It starts with a prepositional phrase ("On... Fionna") then... "a bloody swipe." No verb. Without a verb, it is...

    [CONAN] Legends of Kern

The thing is, it not only fails as pastiche, it fails as a well-written novel. It really falls apart in the sequels, making it a failure as a well-written trilogy. REHs work will be around for a long time, being discussed, having movies made... Tolkien, the same... Dune... No one is going to...

    [CONAN] Legends of Kern

The best review of the book is here: http://www.conan.com/invboard/index.php?showtopic=1483 It is in post #7 (the other two books follow in posts 8 and 9). He outlines the characterization and plotting problems these books have.

    [CONAN] Legends of Kern

Really? I found it unreadable. The author has no idea how to write a complete sentence. Most of the "sentences" are incomplete, even in the narration. Everyone but Kern was indistinguishable from each other, except by name. No one but Kern really had any character at all. Also, he can't...

    Vincent's NPCs

No problem. The file is up on Xoth's site now.

Couple o'thingies for your Conan game.

"Occult Lore" is one of my most used and most highly recommended supplements. It's an excellent resource.

    Valeria predicament

He probably escorted her to the coast, or put her with a caravan bound for the coast, or a caravan bound for Turan, Iranistan or Shem... or she died. Yes. Marvel Comics had several stories with her. Also, Roland Green wrote a sequel to "Red Nails" called "Conan and the Gods of the Mountain"...

Ilbarsi Knife: any idea of Stats

Well, in the original El Borak story (Three Bladed Doom) that this is a re-write of, the knife was a Khyber Knife, which of course is what a Zhaibar Knife is... therefore, an Ilbarsi knife is the same as a Zhaibar knife, just made in a different region.

    Vincent's NPCs

My players have been in Turan, so I needed more Turanians than I previously had... so, here are over a hundred pages of Turanian NPCs. http://rapidshare.com/files/418459877/Turanian_NPCs.zip.html I've sent this file to Thulsa to put on his site, but he hasn't yet, so I thought I'd go ahead and...

GRIPE: Clash of the Titans (remake)

I agree totally. I love B&W. Most of my favorite movies are in B&W. They do hold atmosphere better.

GRIPE: Clash of the Titans (remake)

My friends sometimes are baffled that I prefer older movies than today's "spectacular events," but I hate the loss of telling a good story. (Maybe that is why Hollywood is writing its own Conan movie instead of adapting one of Howard's). Movies are simply better when a good story with...

    Knowledge (Local)

The only time he would have to roll on it is for local knowledge that is NOT common knowledge - and Barbarians should not an easier time knowing esoteric knowledge about their region just because they live there. People who seek out obscure knowledge about their local region should have that...
