I finally tracked down a relatively inexpensive copy of GURPS Far Trader, then I came here and saw this. :? Oh well - I'll get a few months use out of Far Trader and then I can decide if I switch.

Started playing Classic in 1979 and switched to MegaTraveller when it came out. Somewhere during the MegaTraveller campaign I was running, the characters crashed on Harn and were converted to Harnmaster. Haven't played Traveller since, but I'm now preparing a homebrew campaign using Mongoose...

So.... would this guide be good if I already have a basic idea for an alien species, and just want to flesh it out?

From reading the description of the books, I got the impression that the basic system will be presented in the Civilian book with the Military book building on it to incorporate military stuff.

I just started working on a similiar campaign idea - so this thread and the linked materials have been EXTREMELY interesting. I used this as a guide to ship sizes, which fit in well with my plan to base the space navy on the structure of the current US navy. Only thing that doesn't really fit...

The Journal of TAS issue #2 has an article on Victoria - not sure how much is repeated by the Mongoose book. That's the only canon source I can think of.

This thread has convinced me to roll my own universe, use alternate technologies, house rule the universe to death, and all along tell my players that it is TRAVELLER!!! (and I'll be correct)

Depends on where you get your canon. There was a GDW book that stated "Foreven will never be published" (or some such) so that the individual referee could develop the sector as he/she saw fit. Then Paranoia press published a version, and then Atlas of the Imperium published a version, etc...

But once it was abandoned, it wouldn't meet the qualifications that it originally had. An abandoned starport "A" won't have operational ship building/repair facilities and refined fuel. Try going to an abandoned airport and catching a flight.
