    Official 2300AD Comments Thread

South African here. Actually the old spelling (Kafer) sounds closest to the derogatory term you refer to, especially when pronounced with an Afrikaans accent (long emphasis on the "a"). I think that any of the spellings (even the original German) could be misconstrued depending on how they're...

New Ridley Scott film trailer - Prometheus

In addition to a whole batch of trailers there have also been two "non-trailer" teasers which, IMHO, have been superb: David8 and TED2023. You can see them here: http://www.imdb.com/list/Rt7fcXZ0T8Q

    Altering combat lethality

The clay shows the maximum extend of the temporary stretch-cavity: the shockwave that's created when a high velocity projectile passes through a dense medium and begins to shed its kinetic energy. The crush-cavity on the other hand is the amount of matter that is physically destroyed as the...

    Altering combat lethality

The "problem" is really the simplification the game makes by equating Armour Effectiveness with Damage Reduction. Not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing. Lots of games use this mechanic. In reality, that's not quite how it works. There are essentially two separate but related factors at...

    Advice on running "Bayern"

I've just started planning a mini-campaign (6-8 sessions) following the Bayern as it journeys to the Pleiades. The original GDW adventure is very sketchy and leaves a lot of details to the GM. I have no issue with that in principle, but I do feel a little lost. Here are some questions I have...

2300AD: star maps and real star maps

Huh... what a coincident: I was just visiting the forum to ask the same thing! It would nice to get a hi-res JPG/PDF version of the Near Star Map based on the segments used in the book.

    2300 AD Errata

Does this mean this book is basically a cut-n-paste job from 2320AD with some D20 to MGT conversion bolted on?

    Judges Handbook - where's Ex-Div?

I think mongoose needs to right this wrong by making the missing material available as a free download. That or it's 5 to 10 years in an isocube!

    Judges Handbook - where's Ex-Div?

So I got my copy of the Judges Handbook in the mail yesterday. Been browsing through and for the life of me, I can't find any info on the Ex-Div (Exorcism Division) that was promised on the back-cover... and I quote: The Judge's Handbook provides new rules and options for judges as they patrol...

    2300AD Update

For some reason I thought that this was going to be a 1 book thing, but then I read this in the "State of Mongoose 2011" and rejoiced: Colin Dunn has been working hard on 2300AD, a new look at the classic setting, now revised for the Traveller rules set. As I write this, the core rulebook is...

    Alastair Reynolds

"House of Suns" is my favourite Reynolds novel. Transcendental far future at it's very best. Hist short stories are also pretty good, especially Galactic North. If there's one thing that he doesn't do well it's endings: Revelation Space & Pushing Ice being notable examples.

Traveller tech stuck in the 70's?

I'm not sure about that. I think playing in a transhuman-type setting means you will not be having "traditional" Traveller adventures. It requires a shift in the mindset and expectation of what the game will be about. Okay, so you have access to planet-busting technology and nano-fabricators...

    Transhuman Traveller

The Transhuman Sci-Fi genre has been getting some love with the recent release of "Eclipse Phase". There are a bunch of similar themed games in the works (Diaspora and Mindjammers). I'm wondering what the appeal of a Transhuman Traveller game would be: nanotech, cortical stacks, mind-emulation...

What Properties Would You Like To See Mongoose Acquire?

Personally, I'm a bit tired of Old Skool Sci-Fi, so I'd vote for more contemporary stuff: Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds Takeshi Kovacs Series (Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, etc.) - Richard K. Morgan Commonwealth or Confederation Saga - Peter F. Hamilton Culture Universe - Iain M. Banks...

What Type of weapon/systems would you like to see for ships?

However, it should be pointed out that the "High Altitude Nuke" method of generating an EMP doesn't work in space unless the explosion is near an atmosphere and a magnetic field. Nuclear Weapons in space are actually far less effective at killing spaceships than they are at destroying...
