Sup4 - I hope you don't mind me voicing my opinion - because it's your game and your choice - but to me a running race seems an unlikely 'rite of passage' for a warrior / hunter type society. Most rite of passage rituals in the real world revolve around either hunting or fighting. Why a race...
It's rather counter intuitive isn't it? In most 'gloomy lands' where it rains all the time or is otherwise miserable, people drink more to cheer themselves up! Scotland, Ireland and much of eastern Europe come to mind!
I have just ordered the revised All Flesh Must Be Eatten book to have a look at the D20 conversion stats in that. Unisystem is a super system. Combines a very simple mechanic with enough detail to make combat cinematic - particulary the version of the system used in the Buffy and Angel games...
I understand what you're doing but it sounds like a game within a game to me. All I want my critical hit add-on to do is to provide a bit of instant cinematic detail for the game - a bit of splatter really, plus something to move away from being chipped to death...
I'm going to try another...

I do my combats like that too. Makes it simpler and I learnt a long time ago that as soon as I introduce miniatures into a game certain players become too caught up in making sure their character looks like their favourite minature....
Although Green Ronin did a pretty good job on Thieves World the maps they produced of the city were poor (and not even as acurate as the maps of the city in the books). In many ways Chaosiums old version was much nicer - despite not having as much detail. I'm sure Mongoose could make a great RQ...
