    Differentiating Turan/Hyrkania and Shem

The only reason I was insisting on this is that I had quite a few Persian friends when I lived in the States. They were not too happy the first time I mistakenly called them "Arabs" and I think it would have been much worse for me if we hadn't had that many Mai Tais. Call it enforced...

    Differentiating Turan/Hyrkania and Shem

First things first... Turks and Mongols and Persians are very very different. Persians were Indoeuropeans and go way way back. Iranistan is closest to Persia and that is only to Persia of the Sassanids (I'd avoid later periods as they would coincide with the Muslim conquest). Shem in my mind is...

    Formation Combat Revisisited

I do have to slightly disagree there... Distinctions were pretty well based on armour and order of battle in ancient to almost Rennaisance times. Roman auxilliary infantry was "light" infantry. Not as heavily armoured and it could adjust to a looser formation than a regular cohort. Roman legions...

What part of "there are 100 of them" didn't you un

Never underestimate the power of stupidity... One of the first things that my players learned early on is that running away is a viable option which can be readily applied when lots of armoured people with big swords are attacking. They'll know better next time. P.S. I do use Uncle Bear's...

Devils advocate - Why should I play Conan instead of D&D

D&D is not a bad game... I've had some great D&D sessions in the past, until I ran my first Conan games. However, soon it turns into a constant loot frenzy where you try to accumulate more magical items, weapons, armour, money and of course XPs so you can survive... Conan has none of that crap...

    Ancient Rome or ancient Greece...

The initial question in itself was a bit flawed... What part (and era) of ancient Greece and Rome? Was it Greece of the city states? If yes, was it Sparta and its militant view or Athenian democracy? Perhaps it was the northern savage parts of Thrace? Or maybe the light-hearted Ionian states...

    Getting my campaign started

Adding more "guests" might be the thing I needed... I planned to stretch the visit for at least a couple of days (late summer thunderstorms, lack of supplies, and weird creatures seen in the vicinity)... But the guests are a great addition. A Hyperborean mercenary throwing hints about the power...

    Getting my campaign started

I finally got around to finding the time to run a Conan campaign... I decided on short adventures, not necessarily connected with eachother, but with recurring characters, particularly villains. I decided that its much more true to the spirit of the Conan stories, plus I can mess with my players...

    Cinematic inspiration

How could we have forgotten the Dirty Dozen? I just got Across the Thunder Rivre (great job Vincent, really great job) and I was thinking about using this premise to round up my PCs in the equivalent of a penal battalion. Stuck in the middle of the Westernmarck with nothing but cutthroats and...

    Cinematic inspiration

See, I had the same problem with Sam Spade. He was a thinking kind of detective; the only one not to get shot in the Maltese Falcon, simply because he never carried a gun. Somehow I find it hard to picture Conan (or most adventurers) follow such a course. Black Rain was also a (more) modern film...

    Cinematic inspiration

Lair of the White Worm is also an interesting film. It is based on a not so well-known story by Bram Stoker. Albino dragons, virgins sacrificed in an intersting way, to say the least, and snake people. Hard to beat as far as content goes. Since Akira Kurosawa was mentioned a lot, Ran and the...

Can you recommend and good 3rd Party Products

Well, then I should not tell you about my scenario based on the Three Musketeers.... Alexander Dumas would definitely roll in his grave with that one.

Can you recommend and good 3rd Party Products

I've liked the D20 versions of A Wheel of Time and A Game of Thrones. Both can work wonders for inspiration and both are relatively low-magic (well, perhaps not so true for the Wheel of Time). Bloodriders for Hyrkanian nomads, Zingaran Waterdancers, The Others threatening settlements in...

    Adventureseed for Nordheim

The story is "The Night of the Wolf". I highly recommend it. In fact most if not all the stories in the Baen Cormac McArt book are ready adventures. All you need is pretty much to draw a map or two and stat the NPCs. But the adventure seed, plot and flow are all there. I plan to, ahem, borrow...

    Adventureseed for Nordheim

My ideas for adventures in Nordheim are unfortunately stolen ones. There is a great Cormac MacArt story, where an island fortress of Vikings is overrun by furious Caledonian picts. Substitute Vikings with Nordheimers and Caledonian Picts with, well, Picts and you can have a great adventure. PCs...
