Divine Spells Sorted by Type

Postby Rurik » Sat Dec 02, 2006 4:11 am

I just got my Cults 1 today, and yes, there are definitely some issues with it. One of the biggest is figuring out what gods have access to what spells. So I figured I could either piss and moan about it, or do something about it.

Then it hit me - why not do both? So I did. This is the pissing and moaning part.

So it works like this. A god has access to the spells explicitly listed for it in cults. It also may have one or more types listed and should have access to all the spells listed for the gods type(s) in the Companion (which is how Humakt gets access to True (Weapon) - and Resurrect mind you, but that is a different bitch). This does not appear to be made clear in the Cults book, but is stated in the Companion. They also have access to all spells in the Companion that are listed for all (duh).

And since there is no list of rune spells by cult type you basically have to peruse the entire spell list in the companion to figure out which darn spells a god has access to. Try it for a few cults, it is a royal pain.

Which brings me to the end of my piss and moan bit and onto the do something about it part.

Code: Select all

All Consecrate
            Dismiss Magic
            Excommunicate
            Exorcism
            Extension
            Find (X)
            Heal Wound
            Mindlink
            Soul Sight
            Spirit Block
            Spiritual Journey

Beast Beserk

Chaos Fear
            Madness

Death Resurrect

Earth Absorption
            Heal Body

Fertility Heal Body
            Regrow Limb
            Resurrect

Hunter Sureshot

Moon Illusion (All)
            Madness
            Mindblast

Night Absorption
            Fear

Sea Breathe Water

Storm Lightning Strike

Sun Resurrect
            Sunspear

Trickster Illusion (All)
            Reflection

Water Breathe Water

War Beserk
            Shield
            True (Weapon)
This should make life much easier. I am goint to format this as a Word Document as well and put it on MR Qwiki. I'll put a link when it is done.

EDIT: The Word Doc is here.

Very nice. Its odd that the only spell that the Death gods get is...

...Resurection.

Well, we could always remove the Death type from Humakt.

Explicit spell lists would have made it:

1) Much easier to find spells available to each cult, as they would all be listed in one place in the same book.

2) More flexible. Humakt could not have Resurrect, and be limited to True (Sword) - technically right now a Humakti can take True (Mace) if they wanted.

Though it certainly seems like space was at a premium. The book ends rather abruptly at the very end of the last page, no index or anything.

Normally I would would begrudge them for including full page art when they cut so much to fit in 96 pages but damn isn't 'Odayla faces the Great Bear' nice?

You can find a copy here. And here here. Or here.

There is also one right here.

I hope that helps...

Nice Doc file

Good enough for a cover, but the covers cool as well.
One of the biggest is figuring out what gods have access to what spells
Its probably the biggy everything else is fairly cool... except the missing thunderbolt... and a couple of the cults being 'Sexually' toned down(Uleria & Gorgorma)... but other wise its wicked.

On the spell front an index would have been cool - but its cramped inside as it is.

I can't find where in COG it says use the Explicit lists, other than them being defined as explicit in the companion ;)
Also noticed a couple of the cults get given spells they would already have explicity by associated cults.

i.e Barntar
is of Type Fertility
- gains Heal Body, Regrow Limb, and Resurrect
- Ernalda grants Heal body?

Resurrect - is a hell of alot more common every god and his dog provides it near enough.
Most of the gods have mythic reasons for self resurrection - Elmal, Yelm, and even plant/Earth Gods - still it looks a bit common place.

Humakt's spell list looks a bit weak, or odd:
All Common
Turn Undead
Morale
War & Death
Beserk
True (Sword) weapon*
Shield
Resurrect

Detect Truth may be missing from the list - as spell description references Humakt.

Some of the Gods, Types seem a bit off as well, Orlanth Adventurous and Orlanth Dragon Slayer are pretty much War gods, but have only the Storm Type... but thats more of a minor point than anything else.

It would be cool if erata was issued for the book so then at least we'ld have some constistency in the game and later suppliments.

True. God types do not fit into Glorantha all that well, however. This is why they were never used in the old Gods of Glorantha. The problem with using them is that many gods end up with spells for which they have no mythological reason to have. And Gloranthan cults are all about the mythological reasons... That's one of the key things about the place.
