Heavy Fighter Computer
Heavy Fighter Computer
Should the heavy fighter (HG, pg. 102) have a more powerful computer? As printed it cannot run many of the software packages included?
Re: Heavy Fighter Computer
Would need a Computer/35 or at least a Computer/20 to swap out programs.
Re: Heavy Fighter Computer
That would be my take on it,
It's TL15 so I don't see much point on skimping on a decent computer, but it's clearly priced as a cheap computer,
Either that or the software should have been downgraded,

Yes, obviously a rating 5 computer with rating 20 software makes little sense. Neither does the armament or the ~16 Dt free space.
The original from CT had a m/6 ≈ rating 30, but that is too expensive.
Say a m/10 to m/20 might be reasonable? The dogfighting DM makes up for the small computer.
We kicked around some fighters and numbers during beta:

Re: Heavy Fighter Computer
Yeah - doubling the price does seem a little off...
A moderate computer and slightly lower spec software might keep close to the original price whilst making everything fit?
Say:
Computer 20, MCr 5
Evade/1 (Bandwidth 10), MCr 1
Fire Control/2 (Bandwidth 10), MCr 4
Total: MCr 9
vs.
Computer 5, kCr 30
Evade/2 (Bandwidth 15), MCr 2
Fire Control/4 (Bandwidth 20), MCr 8
Total: MCr 8.03
Adds roughly MCr1 to the price, still keeping things affordable and usable?

How about:
Computer 15, MCr 2
Evade/2 (Bandwidth 15), MCr 2
Fire Control/3 (Bandwidth 15), MCr 6
Total: MCr 10
Evade and FC are better in different situations, so you switch to match.

That makes more sense,

Re: Heavy Fighter Computer
Maybe more efficient and elegant programmes to squeeze in tighter capacities?
Space for computing is virtual; in theory, if the overriding factor is rate of fire, detection and bridge size, heavy fighters can range in tonnage from thirty five tonnes to fifty.

Re: Heavy Fighter Computer
You could have variants with upgraded computers for squadron coordination, reconnaissance or ECM/ECCM duties. Just depends on your fleet’s core philosophy on the roles fighters play and their interactions with larger fleet vessels.
