Malazan Book of the Fallen

Postby Khunkwai » Thu Sep 01, 2011 6:33 am

My suggestion would be for an RPG based on the epic and awesome book series by Steven Erikson.

Why, well I could trot out the 10,000 reasons but I'll simply state the case with "because it is bloody epic. "

...and no one has done it yet as far as I can tell, though the author ran the game in GURPS as an RPG himself...but it is well deserving of it's own system and a solid firm to support and develop the game...

I and many others would second this, but I believe I heard somewhere that Mongoose aren't interested in doing it.

As for the RPG, I was working on a Runequest version:

This would be a huge winner for LEGEND!

Having the copyright for this would probably define LEGEND I reckon. Chaosium's BRP is identified with the Lovecraftian setting, The Design Mechanism's RQ6 will be identified with Glorantha, and LEGEND could be identified with the Malazan setting.

Yep it's a slam dunk for sure, this would grab the attention of everyone I think, its like getting the rights for the Game of Thrones at the moment. I can't think of a better property to grab actually.

I'm sure we'll see the Malazan setting as a rpg one day. I just hope its not D20 or GURPS...

I would buy this if Mongoose released it. In fact, it is the only new campaign setting I would invest in again. I am, otherwise, still quite content with the World of Greyhawk.

I think the flexibility of the Legend rules would work well with the Malazan setting. Oh boy, this would be Birthday, Christmas and everything else all together

I think the authors originally deleloped it from a D20 game?

I would love to see a proper campaign setting for this - mainly background and pictures - could be absolutely awesome :)

As far as I have ever read, Esselmont and Erickson used GURPS rules.

I would love a developed campaign world and proper racial explanations. Also, more detail on the Warrens

I posted a link above to a thread I was working on, but nobody else really contributed and I burned myself out.

What about a book that totally goes into the setup and fleshing out of a star system. Starting with the type of star, and it's stats. Then the number of orbits and what is in each and ideas for setting up UWP's for each orbit. Maybe other random charts for cultrure setup on the primary world with other characters and plot leads. Also there could be charts on trade and shipping within the system too. I think there could be enough there to flesh out quite a large book. I would say that this book would be mostly for GMs. Also there could be a section on encounters too.

Hi Guys

Question directed at Matt really is he has the time.

Is it true that Mongoose wouldn't be interested in Malazan and if so why?

The question probably sounds confrontational but its not ment to be at all. I am sure there is a reason I just haven't considered. I would just be interested to know some of the thughts behind business decisions not to go for game licenses.

Or if anybody else know the answer to the question that would be cool!

Up the ladder, third floor, right hand corridor, 6 doors down.
Through the door, across the field with the space cows to the lamp post.
Climb the lamp post and jump directly upwards.
Land on the bicycle.

As I understand it, although some people have gushed about the series, sales have been 'modest' - which may mean that an rpg based on it would suffer a similar fate. I'm guessing that any publishing company which has to shell out for writers, artists and whatnot to get the rpg into print would want more than just a 'modest' return on their investment.

I see what you mean, but in this case modest means a million copies as of the last book to come out two years ago, so there will have been more since then.

In terms of the licences mongoose currently hold that represents a very large potential base.

Ah - I must have been mistaken. The quote I saw mentioned sales of a million books, but for the series as a whole, not the last book.
