Minor Alien Module 1: Luriani
Minor Alien Module 1: Luriani has just been posted on DrivethruRPG.com.
The Luriani are a race of contradictions. Most outsiders are struck by the extreme level of politeness in their society and apparent calm demeanour, only to be shocked by a sudden outburst of passion. They are a people with no significant martial tradition that have fought some of the most brutal wars in history. They are loyal Imperial citizens that suddenly and seemingly without warning came to the brink of revolt. These apparent contradictions are the root cause of the Luriani's reputation as emotionally unstable and unpredictable. Yet all these make perfect sense to the Luriani themselves.
This book, the first in the Minor Alien Module series, explores the Luriani, detailing their history, society, physiology and technology. Players will enjoy creating Luriani characters and flying Luriani ships, while referees will have access an entirely new civilisation for their games.
You can grab a copy at http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/1 ... 3A-Luriani

Interesting stuff...I did not see this one on the forthcoming releases. Will exist solely in PDF or will there be a hard copy down the road?
As long as there are stars in the sky and dreams about the universe, as long as there are chronicles of high adventure to recount, there will always be Traveller.

This is new material, at least for Mongoose. The Luriani are in GURPS. Reading it now, seems interesting.
One note on the genetics, if sex is simply a dominant/recessive trait in this species, with males being the recessive result, shouldn't their gene be represented as "dd" rather than "Dd"?

Not a dominant/recessive trait. Its a genetic marker, on or off, on/on and off/off are female, on/off are male. you get 25% dd, 25% DD and 50% Dd. I'd imagine Aslan have a similar system.JRoss wrote:This is new material, at least for Mongoose. The Luriani are in GURPS. Reading it now, seems interesting.

Oh, and now I'm seeing that crossbreeding can impart a longer lifespan to a character and also that a cfemale can have a maximum of three terms. I can't seem to find any information on this besides two tables in the character section. Does this mean that the "longer lifespan" option simply lifts the three term limit?

Re: Minor Alien Module 1: Luriani
Errr well in the original draft there were modified rules for the ageing of full blooded Mmarislusant characters (as they're genetically pure Vilani) which some crossbreeds can inherit. Basically it was to change their ageing DM to half terms rounded up (plus a note that the Mmarislusant actually see this a a burden not a benefit). Just the word count was 30K and I wrote 40K and things got cutJRoss wrote:Oh, and now I'm seeing that crossbreeding can impart a longer lifespan to a character and also that a cfemale can have a maximum of three terms. This might help explain (some of got cut in editing, most I just dropped out before the final draft)JRoss wrote:Oh, and now I'm seeing that crossbreeding can impart a longer lifespan to a character and also that a cfemale can have a maximum of three terms. Cut material
Ageing
Racial Luriani, Verasti Dtareen and mixed race Verasti Dtareen/Mmarislusant characters age normally. However pure bred Mmarislusant and some Luriani/Mmarislusant Cross-breeds have the Vilani's extended lifespan. These characters only use half their terms (rounded up) as a DM on their ageing throws. Note due to the strong integration of the Mmarislusant into Luriani society, most consider their long lives a burden rather than a benefit as they usually outlive friends and family by a considerable margin.
Female/c
The last three decades have seen the emergence of a third type of Cross-breed, the Human female/c. Human females with a cc chromosome structure began to emerge some 90 years ago during the 4th generation. However these early Human cc females are not considered to be female/c Cross-breeds as they have no chance of inheriting Luriani traits. The true female/c type had long been predicted but only began to be born in the 7th generation 30 years ago. There are probably only several thousand of these, most still in their childhoods. These children have a slight chance of inheriting Luriani traits from the general genetic background. Like healthy natural Cross-breeds, Human female/c characters should only be allowed under exceptional circumstances. Female/c characters may be born to Human, Cross-breed or female/c mothers (from the 4th generation onwards).
Luriani and sex
When it comes to sex, Luriani's have a notorious reputation. Luriani of both genders can expect to be subject to unwanted attention in this regard and will have little trouble finding companionship of this sort. Many Luriani are actually distressed by this, claiming it difficult to find company of any other kind. However, this reputation, while exaggerated, is not that inaccurate. Luriani are far more open about sex than many other cultures. They have long had a tendency towards bisexuality and clearly differentiate between physical and emotional intimacy. Sex is a part of many Luriani relationships, not just romantic ones. Often an offer to share a Luriani's bed indicates little more than they find a person pleasant company and would like to get to know them better.

Addressing Luriani Nobles
The Luriani's small number of hereditary nobles are the most important liaisons between Luriani society and the wider Imperium. As such their correct forms of address differ depending on whether Imperial or Luriani protocol is being used. Imperial protocol calls for the noble to be addressed using their noble title followed by their personal name, then the family names of both parents (usually with the more junior first) and finally the world or geographic location associated with their title. Thus Brandon Archduke's wife is known in Imperial protocol as either Baroness Imelda Lisun Fierana of Secord or the Lady Imelda Lisun Fierana of Gateway, while in Luriani protocol she is almost exclusively known as Imelda Ora Sakuya Fierana Minomoru Baroness of Secord, though she may occasionally be referred to as Madam Imelda Minomoru in her role as Minomoru family matriarch. Naturally this does cause considerable confusion but using the incorrect form for the circumstances can cause offence. Fortunately both styles use the informal your grace, my lord or my lady after the initial introduction.

Luriani Myths
Jump Space: The different nature of the Luriani brain leads them to perceive jump space differently. Many claim to see patterns and order at the moment of entry into jump space. Legends claim that the greatest Luriani navigators can actually set a course by these patterns
Alakukhuuga: A monster from Vilani mythology, also know as the taker of hands. Said to lay in wait under the bed of children who misbehave waiting to cut off their hands to replace its own misshapen ones. Many believe the myth has its origins in the Luriani's fanatic resistance to Vilani rule.
Tajkammumm: Supposed to be a pre-conquest artefact of immense power that allowed the Luriani to destroy entire Vilani squadrons. Legends claim it survived the conquest and was smuggled off Daramm in during the diaspora. No supporting evidence for existence of such an artefact has ever been found.
Fido Farko: A Luriani priest (Fido) from the Vilani occupation. Mythic creator of the martial art eeniag. Supposedly he could hear the thoughts of his enemies and throw them through the air with a flick of his hand. Legends claim he will return to save the Luriani in their hour of greatest need.

Subsector F (Guadix Drift) is covered a little. Didn't go into any real depth to avoid preempting any potential Ley sector book. (have no idea if one is intended, but I assume Mongoose would like to do one eventually).GypsyComet wrote:Any of Ley Sector in the book?
