If you could what crew would you pick for the Prometheus?

Postby Hopeless » Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:25 am

Assuming you're using either Traveller or T2300 setting rules and you get to choose whatever of the ships available in either book.

YOU are in charge of selecting what crew you'll take with you on this mission.

The only characters you can't create yourself is David and Weylan himself.

So given the choice of any ship listed limited only by the book or setting you're using what ship would you choose and what crew would you take along on this exploration mission to the site of a suspected alien ruin.

Please note you're limited to a single ship that doesn't mean you can't have fighters or dropships along as long as they can fit, but given the Prometheus only had 17 crew who would you have chosen to go on this mission?

I am assuming you get to design your own version of the archaeologists so feel free to set out what would be your selection for this mission!

Are you allowed to chose characters with an INT above 4 and training in sensible first contact procedures?

Oh yes, of course that doesn't stop you from designing whatever suits your fancy after all you could easily meet those pre-requisites but what player would ever limit themselves to just that kind of behaviour! :D

I actually liked the captain and his two helmsmen, I also thought Vickers would turn out to be another android but seriously where were their security escort and backup?!

Reminded me of the opening episodes of Gene Roddenbury's Andromeda and everyone's favourite Nietzchean!

I gues the Magog was their version of Alien, now I have to hunt down a video of Tyr walking around with a really big gun and listening to Wagner, enjoying himself as he draws every bad guy on the entire planet towards him!

"They were playing Wagner. It's the most fun I've had in about six months."

Possibly Vickers as well.
So given the choice of any ship listed limited only by the book or setting you're using what ship would you choose and what crew would you take along on this exploration mission to the site of a suspected alien ruin.
Some sort of orbital/lander combination seems good - depends on the environment, of course, and from the impression of the storms, wouldn't have done much good in the end.

There was nothing really wrong with the design of the prometheus itself - a semi-clean vehicle park deck (as long as it's secure) and some multi-role labs and halls. The lack of any sort of flight capable runabout seems odd given that they didn't know what terrain was awaiting them
Please note you're limited to a single ship that doesn't mean you can't have fighters or dropships along as long as they can fit, but given the Prometheus only had 17 crew who would you have chosen to go on this mission?
Depends, of course, who knew what was going on - obviously the crew didn't, until too late (hence the wager).

Ultimately, it's just a case of being more methodical. Someone who's been exposed to an alien biotech lab doesn't get back on board without a third party sweep of their person and gear, and if they remove their helmet, they spend a set period in a secure decontamination lab and have bloodwork done. (Which, sooner or later, you'll do).

Security is a reasonable requirement - since you don't know what you're heading into, you have a (small) stock of firearms and some overlay body armour. Not enough to freak everyone out, but enough to arm up the captain and his crew with pulse rifles. It doesn't take up much mass and it provides insurance.

One other thing is, having brought the recon bees, make better use of them - you release the damn things, let them map the place, then go and look door-by-door at the interesting signals they find. The primary one being the life-sign.
Understand that I'm not advocating violence.
I'm just saying that it's highly effective and I strongly recommend using it.

I left Vickers off just so you could think up anything you want to do with her, for example she's actually a Zhodani and is frustrated that with control over the corporation within reach the only thing standing between her and switching off Weyland's pod is an android he has openly viewed as like a son to him...
As I said Traveller or T2300 it doesn't necessarily have to be run without a Spinward Marches version! :D

And the fact there was more than one mound left you wondering why they didn't launch some kind of long range drone to scope out the area let alone leave an orbital satellite to provide a better idea of the terrain and weather which seemed to catch them by surprise...

There were 17 official crew members on Prometheus, heres a list and what their occupations were;

Vickers: Weyland rep
David: Designated android (not actual crew member)
Shaw: archeologist
Holloway: archeologist
Ford: Medic
Fifield: Geologist
Milburn: Biologist
Janek: Captain
Chance: Bridge Crew
Ravel: Bridge Crew
Mercenaries x4: Ship security
Mechanics x4: Ship maintenance

This doesn't take into consideration one more exception to the rule. Those who have seen the film will realise what I mean.

Ahem
No creatures would stand a chance with my crew on the job. A number even have had both extraterrestrial and creature encounters under their belts.

The crew like the original Alien crew are selected for their ordinariness (save David) which makes them a perfect Traveller crew. You do not need uber characters for Traveller - you need characters with smarts and very human flaws.

BTW, I did not get the sense those were security/marines but actually synthetics just at a lower level than David. I get the impression once the Predator gun was analyzed and archeological Holloway's became part of the public domain...W-Y would put synthetics on every ship to protect their assets and prevent mutiny like Sky Marshals and search for source of alien tech for profit.

As far as the movie, I liked many parts of it, it certainly was not canon but it had lots of cool ideas that I could see applicable to MTU.
As long as there are stars in the sky and dreams about the universe, as long as there are chronicles of high adventure to recount, there will always be Traveller.

"If you could what crew would you pick for the Prometheus?"

I'd just pick anyone off the street that tested as Int >4. That way I'd end up with a crew at least 50% smarter than the one cast...

@ Kafka - I believe it was Vickers who was there (at least it was her front) to protect Weyland Corp interests. I think from what we did see, those mercs and maintenance red-shirts were actually real people.

I had the sense at this time there were only David 8's about, though Janek's questioning of Vickers leads me to believe Weyland was looking into varients being made as of 2089 (which would obviously lead to Ash and Bishop models).

I also don't count AVP as canon since we have Peter Weyland in Prometheus, though some are trying to say he is the son of the Weyland from the AVP films (Pity the timeline says it's Peter who set up Weyland as a business, not his father...).

The 2 companies had different names

AvP was Weyland Industries
Pro was Weyland Corp

Ash & Bishop were built by Hyperdyne.

The Peter Weyland of Prometheus seemed to have inside information about the nature of the aliens that is easier to justify if you assume that he is descended from the Weyland from the AVP films. Some of the commands given to David make little sense unless Peter Weyland knew more about the engineers / space jockeys than the archaeologists who "convinced" him to sponsor the mission. How Weyland knew to instruct David to carry out certain actions during the initial investigation of the alien ruins is never really explained, but I assumed that he had been secretly gathering information about the extraterrestrials for a long time. (If I was writing the sequel, I might hint that Weyland's entire fortune was based upon reverse-engineering alien technology recovered from past encounters). Certainly, Peter Weyland seemed to know a lot more than could reasonably be deduced from the information available to the scientists on the Prometheus (although that didn't stop him from making faulty assumptions about the intentions of the engineers...)

Hmn, I wouldn't say that was down to Peter knowing stuff before hand, I'm sure alot was guess-work. David was clearly ordered to find an Engineer and make contact. When he reported to Weyland this mission was a failure because they were all dead - that's when he was told to 'Try Harder'. This is through knowledge of deleted scenes and concepts not brought forward.

David infected Holloway as a last resort, I'm pretty sure he didn't know what would happen. Also his justification of knowledge of the Engineer language was shown by him researching languages down to their cores whilst everyone was in cryo. Also I'm sure if he was given a code he could decipher it due to eidetic memory and logirhythm deciphering within his programming. Most of that stuff was detailed on his product page on the Weyland Industries website.

But the only things David did were to open the head-room (again he could read the language based on Holloway's thesis and his own education) and steal an ampule to investigate seeing as he couldn't make contact with a living Engineer. He didn't know what was the thing before he opened it after Weyland busted his balls from their neural interface to pull his finger out a bit more.

Next thing he does is try to freeze Shaw to take her back to Earth to investigate. I wonder how much this was just his curiosity and not actually Weyland's orders - what purpose could Weyland have for a mutated squid-creature beyond possible scientific advances? Either way, neither of them (Weyland and David) seemed too concerned when Shaw appeared infront of them obviously having had the thing cut out of her.

However there was alot more blood in the med-bay when it comes to the finale than Shaw left there, I wonder if a deleted scene had some red-shirts come in to try and capture the creature - a little shout-out to the first ALIEN when they find the face-hugger isn't on Kane anymore, and when the red-shirts enter the med-bay, the Trilobite massacres them. It makes sense as there are 8 red-shirts on the Prometheus altogether and I don't think Xeno-Fifield killed that many...
