Free Epic Campaign - The Pirates of Drinax
Be the very model of a modern major-general!
We have just posted the introduction and first adventure of a brand new epic camapign for Traveller - The Pirates of Drinax! Written by Gareth Hanrahan (he of Secrets of the Ancients), this will be a rip-roaring tale of the players becoming pirates and carving out their own patch of space as they board fat mercantmen, woo governor's daughters, try to stay from under the heel of two massive empires, and sway neutral ports to their cause. Basically, everything your players have always wanted in a Traveller campaign, they now have free licence to do!
You can grab the first part of the campaign at;
http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/rpgs/ ... rinax.html
(Click on the Downloads, not the Add to Cart!).
Keep an eye on this campaign, as it is going to be a good 'un. Here at the Mongoose offices, we are just about to embark upon it ourselves!

I've just been glancing through the PDF. I actually think that I may prefer this campaign to Secret of the Ancients!

It has a feel of The Stainless Steel Rat to it.
Oh, and Adventure One has a memorable, and particularly nasty, walk-in appearance by something from a CT Double Adventure in it ...
And no, there's no wooing of it ...

I love what I see so far!
Mongoose is awesome for supporting Traveller games and gamers!
My hat's off to Gareth Hanrahan, who is very good at what he is doing!

I'm not sure how the guy finds time to sleep or eat though with the amount of work he produces...Vargrz wrote:My hat's off to Gareth Hanrahan, who is very good at what he is doing!

Although it's still early days, it's looking very good indeed. I love the fact that it has a very different feel to it than Secret of the Ancients, emphasizing the diversity of the OTU. That adventure path was intended to build on the classic module, whereas this breaks new ground. It also fleshes out a region of the OTU that doesn't get enough love. Plus some of the descriptive text is awesome - the Floating Palace of Drinax is a cool setting all on its own!BFalcon wrote:Prime: It's that good? I've not had a chance to look at it.

Yay! Additional awesome!
(And additional Isaac Asimov-based quotes)
I like the Harrier.
The players less so.
"You're going to be given an incredibly agile TL15 gunship!"
"Awesome! Wait....what's the catch?"
"It may be sliiiiiightly broken."
"Define 'slightly broken'..."
"Err....well...one of the guns still works! Full combat capability will only cost about ten million credits."
"Sorry, I didn't catch that last."
"ten million credits..."
"I see."
Morale is a nice trick - it now adds a meaningful guide as to how readily people will surrender, and It's nice to see an expansion on NPC crew skills - what you actually get for your monthly credits.
The crew generation is interesting, too. I had a few comments back on some of them..
"Sixteen...err...'Once shot a man in District 268, just to watch him die', it says here."
"That's a painful place to shoot someone. Also, I'm not entirely happy this guy is our medic."

Understand that I'm not advocating violence.
I'm just saying that it's highly effective and I strongly recommend using it.

Re: Free Epic Campaign - The Pirates of Drinax
Looking very good so far. This one will, I think, be played more often than secrets.
Everyone loves a good Pirate game and mixing in the whole campaign theme of rebuilding the ancient kingdom, reclaim or conquer planets and maybe trigger a war with the 3I, the Aslan or both
One tiny thing, I hate to mention it because I don't want to spoil things and its overall a very good start. Its a niggly little detail but don't P-Beams need a triple turret these days. Most people probably didn't even notice the double turret reference, sorry
Otherwise please bring up the rest of the adventures and thanks to Gareth Hanrahan for all his fine work.

Traveller: Nonsense, those rumours about me and crashes, no truth in them at all. I never had a landing I didn't walk away from!
ACTA-SF: Who are we, GORN. What do we want, Cruisers that can turn.... Wait, OK Escorts... Wait. I'll get back to you !

It's slightly worse than that - the p-beam AND a missile rack are in that double. I don't know the TL rules in HG though - can TL-15 weapons squeeze into smaller spaces?AndrewW wrote:It was noticed, I guess they didn't fix it...Captain Jonah wrote:One tiny thing, I hate to mention it because I don't want to spoil things and its overall a very good start. But all in all, I'm very excited by this campaign. I've been casually eyeing the Trojan Reaches for a while, and this "directed sandbox/actions have consequences" approach seems like a fun idea.
The campaign is probably as close to a "Mass Effect" campaign as we're going to get out of Mongoose without some fancy licensing.

My understanding was that the missile launcher was in the disabled turret but the magazine with its missiles is still intact.hdan wrote: It's slightly worse than that - the p-beam AND a missile rack are in that double. Where in HG it says anything about particle beams needing extra space to begin with?hdan wrote:It's slightly worse than that - the p-beam AND a missile rack are in that double. I don't know the TL rules in HG though - can TL-15 weapons squeeze into smaller spaces?
I know older travellers required that but haven't seen any rule saying that in current edition.

High Guard Errata, Page 47: "Only one particle beam may be fitted to a turret, but this must be a triple turret."tneva82 wrote:Where in HG it says anything about particle beams needing extra space to begin with?hdan wrote:It's slightly worse than that - the p-beam AND a missile rack are in that double. I suppose you could make the case that, although it needs to be in a triple turret, it doesn't actually use the two other slots....

Re: Free Epic Campaign - The Pirates of Drinax
The ship sheet on page 7 of the drinax intro pdf shows both p-beam and missile mounted to Hardpoint #1. Maybe that's a typo?Captain Jonah wrote:My understanding was that the missile launcher was in the disabled turret but the magazine with its missiles is still intact.

Re: Free Epic Campaign - The Pirates of Drinax
I woke up this morning, harbouring one of my more bizarre thoughts.
The "dreamt of owning a Free Trader and the Captain's Woman told me in bed that she was pregnant" kind of thoughts.
Here is my thought.
Somewhere halfway through the first episode ... everybody bursts into song. No, not that kind of song. Princess Rao is pretty by future standards - which makes her huge by modern day standards, with a majestic soprano voice. Her father is a baritone, and the Prince is a tenor.
Yes ... the Campaign turned before my mind's eye into an opera.
The Pirates of Dri ... zance.
