Since I'm certainly the most active moderator on these forums, here's how I'd like you to report SPAM posts from now on. IF a Mongoose staffer says different, that's fine, do that but in the meantime here's how I'd like it done.

1) Do NOT PM me directly, I do not want or need 7 PMs all telling me about the same SPAM post.

2) Do NOT post on the SPAM thread itself, other than to say you have reported it which you should do using one of the methods I will outline below. Posting on the thread only draws needless attention to it.

3) Please make a post on THIS thread detailing specifically where the SPAM thread is by any of the following methods:

i) A direct link to the SPAM post in question, this can only be done if you're accessing the forums directly rather than through the the 'frame' method from the main site.
ii) A direct link to the SPAM thread in question, again only possible with direct forum access
iii) The user ID of the SPAM poster, this is the best way if you do not want to click on a suspect thread, it's easy to find this way, not as easy as the above but pretty good.
iv) Failing all of the above, post the area of the forum the SPAM is in AND the thread name, each area of the forum is quite large and the thread title will greatly speed things up.

The following are methods of how NOT to report a SPAM thread.

a) Posting on the SPAM thread asking for it to be deleted and taking no other action.
b) Posting on the SPAM thread other than to say it has been reported, which you should do via this thread.
c) Sending me a PM with the title 'porn' and a 2 word message saying 'remove it'. No names, no pack drill but you know who you are
d) Pl,ease try to give me all the information from one of the methods of how TO post about a SPAM thread. Just telling me the forum area, leaves a lot of ground to cover.

If someone has posted on the SPAM thread to say it has been reported, please leave the thread alone, unless after some time has passed there is no eveidence of it being reported here.

Please allow some time time for reports to be added, post lag is a pain and can be up to a few minutes even at the best of times.

Most importantly, the forums are modded by one volunteer, me, and any Mongoose staffer with admin rights. I do not provide a 24/7 service, but I will try to deal with the posts next time I'm on. I do also have the occasional weekend away from the internet, like today and yesterday, but I did advise Matt in person of the situation in Birmingham yesterday, when this all seemed to flare up.

Once I've deleted a SPAM post that's been reported here, I'll try to delete the reporting post to keep things tidy.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I'm still getting PM reports of SPAM, please use this thread instead.

Nick is nuking them faster than me it seems, which is harsh as he is on holiday.

I also keep getting PMs from people volunterring to be moderators. I can't mamke you a mod, you need an admin for that, so please PM msprange to volunteer should you wish to do so.

Cant nuke that last one AndrewW, not in my area of modishness.

Interesting that guests seem aable to post now though, I thought they'd killed that option.

I think the big problem is that you seriously need to update the forum software - you're on phpbb2 and the current version is 3.0.4. Among other things it has much better admin control (and user control, so mods can do things like send warnings to wayward users), and also there's a "report post" function which means it's a lot easier for users to report spam and for mods to deal with it.

I do all the techy admin stuff on the SFRPG boards and we just updated to 3.0.4 and it's awesome. If possible, it would be well worth it to take these boards offline for a bit and update them... that said it may be a bit more tricky to update it from such an old version - you might have to rebuild the whole thing from scratch as I'm not sure if the databases are that easy to import from v2.

This may be of some use:

You may also want to get Matt to give you mod powers on the Traveller board too, to deal with the spam threads there.

I don't know how much of it is the different version of the phpbb software, but I know after the alderac forums upgraded it became much less navigable than the Mongoose forums, where they used to be the same.

Maybe it's just me.

It's mostly in the setup. Under the hood things may be different, but for regular users the admins should be able (with a little effort and care) to set things up to look like they did before.

why would this one suddenly be a problem¿

The person bringing up the topic is the product's publisher. His product doesn't say that it requires the Traveller book published by Mongoose. Myself and all the other Licensed Traveller publishers asked Mongoose if we could post announcements for our products that bore the "Traveller Compatible Product" logo. His product does not bare that logo, and he has explicitly said that the Traveller license is far to restrictive for him. Why should he get the benefit of advertising his product on the official Traveller forums if his product is not a licensed Traveller product?

If a fan posted a conversion and said how it enhanced their Traveller game, they can do that. That is still centered around Traveller. His product is not Traveller-centric. It bares no logo, no text that says that Mongoose publishes the Traveller book.

Yeah, it's one of the ones lastbesthope can't kill, no moderator on the Traveller forum.

but anyways, right click on the thread and pull it up in a separate window or tab to get a direct link.

Should I go ahead and report any from the Traveller forum then, even if LBH can't nuke it?

Yes that way if an Admin is around they can do that.

Yup I'de say it is pertinent. I recently increased the Captcha level (from 3 to 4 the highest level) on the forum I'm admin for. Seems to have cut down some on the amount of spam accounts being created.

Incompetent spammer: "samlauncher" shows up on all sorts of forums across the internet, posting a similar message. Sometimes it succeeds in implanting a spammed URL, but it failed to do so here. :)
