John Carters stats appeared in the original 1001 Characters back in '78. FYI

I'd rather see it as a Legend setting.

I just reread the books not too long ago. I'm sorry I did, it has ruined the <cough cough> movie.

I am always amazed at how Follywood can read a paragraph that says "yellow flower in green field" and show a grey desert with purple weeds. Not that Barsoom had yellow flowers in green fields. But my favorite parts of the series had to do with the airships. And the movies version completely ignore the books. Oh well,

But a Barsoom version of Legend would be great!

I think a Barsoom RPG in any shape or form would be good.

+1. Just be sure to include the six-legged dog!

Might be a cheap License after the Critics slated the film (which I thought was entertaining and okay).

Don't bet on it - this is Disney we're talking about. It is, after all, the company that trademarked a pair of mouse ears!

I think it would make a good Traveller setting . Or recreate the old SPACE1889

I think Space 1889 is being covered by Savage Worlds? But it is a great setting (although Traveller might not be the best ruleset for it?).

I think Legend would indeed be a perfect fit for this.

Disney would want the cost of the licence to make up for the money they didn't make off the film...

Actually, Disney can not hold the copyright of any of the Barsoom books. They were written and published around 1917. I believe that the copyright has expired.

The first books are public domain in the United States while the rest are not. This is complicated by the fact that the whole series are public domain in some countries like Australia. However this has not stopped Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc from suing Dynamite Entertainment for trademark infringement and unfair competition:

Apparently they have also taken offense to Dejah Thoris being illustrated topless, which is bizarre if you have read the books.
