Been done before I think several times but thought its time for it to be mentioned again  Anyway, how about Mongoose getting a hold of the Stargate franchise and doing an RPG for it? I know Alderac Entertainment did it but that was ages ago now and so much has happened in the Stargate universe (no, not the new TV show :P).

There is just so much to flesh out that could be seen in the RPG that arent really seen on the show. Like the history of the Goa'uld, the Asgard, different galaxies, the other races seen etc etc. I could just see a wealth of stuff that could be done in an RPG plus a massive number of books could be made ranging from equipments, vehicles, races to perhaps even a map of the galaxies. There is now at least three shows worth of information that could be used.

I've been reading the hold Babylon 5 RPG book Darkness and Light and thought that it would be so awesome if Mongoose did something like that with the Stargate franchise. You know, really show how powerful these elder races are. So things like the history for the Ancients and the Ori as well as what awesome goodies they have at their disposal.

So how about it Mongoose? Pretty pleaseeeeee

IMHO StarGate does not make a good RPG background. A great show but one that is based on Character interaction more than anything else. And that does not translate all that good into an RPG. Add in the restricted environment (Militare in SG, Semi-Military in SGA) and the fact that it works mostly because the characters "get away with it" rather then because the "follow the rules"

I think later seasons of Stargate would have a lot of potentially personally. Mostly cause civilians are more actively involved and there are tonnes of plot points to see beyond the military one. SG-1 showed that corporations and companies were secretly involved in reverse engineering alien technology with businessmen attempting to make a big buck by making use of advanced technology.

Plus, its not limited just to Earth, we have the Hebridan and Serrakin races who have corporations within their society. Plus, criminal elements like the Lucian Alliance as well. So its not just strictly Earth in my opinion but plenty of opportunities. The Goa'uld dominated Trust is another example plus Goa'uld created cults etc etc. Lots of potential in my opinion.

Even within the context of "military only" campaign structure, you could do these in Traveller/StarGate. It is simply that some of the missions would not be sufficiently epic compared to an episode which breaks the rules/command structure/what have you.

It could work real well with Traveller.

Whatever the engine, I'd give it a go. Besides, it would make a nice gift for a Stargate fan.

Would be interested only if a long term commitment to the franchise was possible 5+ years.

Too many new RPG’s start with great prospects only to see the core book plus one or two sourcebooks released before the licence is dropped.

2.5 months into a campaign using slightly house-ruled Traveller (I'm the GM), it works just fine.

I'd buy a book if it was done, but if it isn't, no worries, I can manage as is.

Actually it's not the rules engine that is the problem, any modern system (CP2020/Interlock, Twilight2k V2.2, GURPS, ....) would work just as well.

The problem is getting the "feel" right. The shows are heavily "character" based and getting that is something many roleplayers can't do. It does not help to have a slightly greasy/sweaty 150kg blob in unisex look play the "Carter" equivalent (1). Or the shy and stuttering guy trying to pull of the "O'Neill" (or worse the Shepard) equivalent and failing badly since he misses the timing.

(1) No matter if it is male, female or somewhat in between

A Stargate based RPG would be awesome. (Thinking of writing it myself out of boredom).

As a setting there is a lot to work with and story telling works differently with each type of setting. Stargate on the surface may seem like a poor choice but you have a broad basis of life forms, races, and monsters to work with, a broad basis of tech to utilize, varying base classes and advanced classes to work with all of which stems from the TV series.

EG: Military Track could be the basis of one class set.
Civilian Researcher/Scientist could be another.

Jaffa orders could be yet another track and the Asgardian command structure yet another.

I'm already thinking of templates, base races, tech combos all that could be applied in game.

Indeed, I think there is a lot of rich material and potential for an RPG series being made by Mongoose. I know the show is now sadly no more but can still tap the fanbase by making an RPG now rather than later. Just a thought.

Plus, its an excuse to introduce elements into the Stargate franchise that was never explored on the show. Huge ruins, massive fleets, super techs, better history explanations for the show etc etc. A lot of potential in my opinion.

The system could work quite well but from memory if I recall correctly the alleged problem with licensing renewal for the previous version fell apart due to the money <surprise> and that SGA had to be picked up and developed as well at additional costs.

Now factor in that SGU has come in and stalled, but is still considered canon there is even more material, won't they want more cash for the licence.

Personally I think MGP could do a good job on it although I would prefer to see a full colour well illustrated product rather than the current B&W with a few illustrations, think more like Fantasy Flight do with the 40K books or the late Decipher's version of Star Trek/LotR RPG's.

Also with if it licensed minis as well you could do figure skirmish games a bit like a SG version of JD miniature game, throw in replicators, a few asgard etc to the mix.

anyway thats my 2 pennies worth.

It's a classic Traveller style game. It can be played with a lot of character interaction or a military grab and go game.

I'd say that rather than licence it I'd do a Traveller supplement for dimension hopping, time travel, gates between worlds and allow the GM/player to build campaigns kinda like SG and Sliders and all the great SF novels that they were inspired by.

I'm definitely hoping to try a Stargate-based Traveller game when I have some more experience with the system. One key issue I see with it, though, has to do with the acquisition of new technology. In Stargate SG-1, the characters become familiar quickly with alien weapons and ships, for instance, but in Traveller it would be difficult to pick up a new skill to represent learning to use alien technology.

I'm a little confused at people saying it won't work because it's about characters, well, errr, unless your only experiance of RPG's is 4th ed dnd (spit) then rolplaying is about characters, their interactions and suchlikle. sounds like a perfect setting.
