Introducing myself.

Postby wbnc » Fri Sep 26, 2014 1:19 pm

Hi, decided to introduce myself.

I am assuming I am not breaking some rule, or shooting myself in the foot here so if I am..<hand wave> I was not here, this post never happened and these are not the droids you are looking for...

A few months ago I submitted a few samples,I saw the writers wanted post, and hoping to score some freebies submitted a few items. Hey, the worst that could happen was they could say no thank you, and it was a chance to score some of the shiny new Mongoose version books.

To my surprise my samples were accepted, and I was offered a chance to write a catalog of new and original ships for the Mongoose Traveller setting. Earlier today I sent the first draft in. ( assuming the editors and proofreaders don't hire a hitman)I hope soon it will be available to players who are looking for new toys to play with.

I thought i'd introduce myself, and get to know the people I am hoping will enjoy my work in the future. I've been lurking about on a few Traveller sites, and enjoying the conversations with other fans.

So, while I am working off the headaches, and getting treatment for the aspirin and antacid addiction I've developed while trying to come up with material worthy of being included in a game I truly love, I thought i'd say hi.

Hello and welcome to the board :). Have a feeling i have talked to you already today on another forum  but anyway congrats on publishing for mongoose. Look forward to see what you have come up with, Traveller could always do with more ships.

I thought the name looked familiar...

I've wanted more toys to play with myself. I know people love the old standby ships, I'm hoping that my vessels will be a good fit with the older ships.

Excellent!

Welcome and I look forward to buying your book!

Traveller has a lot of ships, but not a lot of IDEAS about ships. I look forward to what you have come up with.

Thanks for the welcome fellas.

I hope my ideas alleviate the need somewhat. Ideas are sometimes hard to come by.Its worse when you're trying to come up with (good?)ideas for other people to use ... Them thar' things is rare as hens teeth.

Lucky for me I have a great bunch of friends who help me work out my ideas, and get them into non "Byrdspeak"

Will these be a general assortment of ships or will they be following a theme?

And hello.

Thanks for the welcome.

I tried to give an assortment of ships, ranging from smallcraft, commercial vessels, and mercenary ships.

They are all under 3000 tons, and I tried to make them as useful as possible.

Included pending editing :D

facilities such as workshops, labs, and utilities, and some deluxe accommodations such as lounges, casino rooms, medical bays, bar/salon, kitchens ( better than a fridge, and a microwave for nuking insta-meals.) I thought it'd be nice to have more than the basic rooms to customized your spiffy new starship.

the ships I included have descriptions, relevant technical data, maintenance costs, and game use suggestions...
30-500 ton utility modules, passenger, cargo, workshop, medical, troop bays..etc....
10-30 ton automated travel and cargo pods
20-1000 ton automated fuel skimmers
10 -20 ton work/tug/salvage pods
10 ton EVA combat pod
10 ton racing pod ( with suggestions on how to handle racing scenarios)
20 ton interceptor( suggestions on how to handle intercepting missiles/torpedoes and other craft)
30 ton fighter
50 ton fighter
50-100 ton dropship
100 ton packet trader
100 ton gunship/escort
200 ton escort
200 ton fast yacht
200 ton inter system hauler streamlined aerodynamic
300 ton Mercenary Brigs several versions ( 300 hundred tonners are a tricksy beast)
300 ton Special purpose ships ( several versions, scout explorer, mining ship, combat scout, fast attack, stealth fast attack)
300 ton hunter killer
500 ton j-2 armed merchant ship( basic, passenger, merchantman, and Q-ship)
500 ton J-3 freighter
500 ton passenger liner
500 ton Yacht
500 ton Race Yacht
500 to 1000 tone tanker, with a sample mobile refueling platform
500 ton tow vessel
1000 ton Jump ferry
2000 ton cargo vessel

I also included sample ships, NPCs, and adventure seeds for several of the vessels.

Not a bad assortment, though some of these already exist, though they are scattered about amongst various books.

Note that's actually not a complete list, there are a few more ship compents within as well.

oh, yeah...I'll happily admit a few things I added I had some guidance from other sources to draw on. so if ya see something familiar don't think I am going to claim all the credit.

The selection is not even all the ships I have on my machine, I had to drop a number of vessels to stay under the page limit. I stayed with Merc, and commercial ships for this one...although some of the Merc ships really get close to the line between civilian armed craft, and military craft.

Good Luck!

Bit of advice on deckplans, remember these are 3 dimensional moving objects not buildings. Many of Mongooses deckplans are building masquerading as ships.

I understand your point. If I were building them realistically they would all vaguely resemble a nuke sub with modules and pods built around the pressure hull and connected by crawl-ways to the working portions of the ship.
Unfortunately that would require me to build the thing in my head, model out the working parts, then figure out whee to jam the crew in whee they aren't in the way for the works. Now if I were doing deckplans for say Traveller 2300, or some other near future sci-fi I'd probably go with that plan.

That's actually pretty much how I design them. It is surprisingly easy to do. Very few calculations to make to get exact hull dimension.

hint (everything can be inside the pressure hull except the landing gear maybe.)

I may try a few like that in the future, I tried to stay simple, more so players could quickly orient themselves than any other reason.
