Plug on I guess.
You are not alone.

I'm too busy playing for the most part, or reading through new stuff, just spent $37 on DTRPG the other day. It does get depressing though, esp in that it is mostly not true; in the gaming community, Traveller is well respected. For example, I wanted a couple of more players, and in less than a day I had four and had to close the three ads I had posted.

So it goes, just don't let the turkeys get you down. :D

Or maybe you could be less sensitive about other peoples' opinions? Nobody's stopping you from liking whatever you like after all.

And again, nobody's really been 'bad mouthing' MGT or Traveller here for its own sake. And I agree with the sentiment that something should not be supported just because it's got "Traveller" in the name - support it because you actually like it, not because of what it is or who it's made by. I really want to slap the people who say "well it doesn't look great but I'll buy it anyway to complete my collection", or "I'll buy it because it's Traveller" - that's just sending the message that anyone could produce any old crap and it'll still be bought, not that people have to actually work to produce a high quality product.

Having seen what the TV "professionals" keep producing, that may not be a bad thing.

Which reminds me, Space Rangers is on DVD now. I need to go get a copy.

From reading the following section of the kickstarter page for our topic.
I see them having some real hurdles to get through.

"Funding this project is a monumental undertaking, and this is where you come in. Your support through the Kickstarter process is what allows us to make this happen.

•At our base goal of $30k, we can produce a short theatrical format movie: around 22 minutes long.
•At $60k, we can double the show length to around 44 minutes (which counts, under the various motion picture definitions, as feature-length).
•At $90k, we can make this an extended story at around 88 minutes.
•At $120k, we can make this a truly memorable experience at 96 minutes.

There’s more: We have a few stretch goals in mind after we break $90k, but we’re keeping that information under wraps until we get closer to hitting our goals."

I do wish them all the luck in the world but under my thoughts I cannot back them. If they want to make it really good they should scrap all ideas of any stretch goals, and have every penny they make go to the production of the show and any rewards they already have listed.

I do understand that the videos they have now are preproduction videos and are not of the same quality that they wish to make the show in. If the show is gonna be 22 minutes long they can introduce all the cast members and then fade to black as they ran out of time.

I also do not like the name of the main character, i hope they could make Spin a nick name of a character named John "Spin" Ward, I myself do not like the last name of Spinward for a character in a show that Travels the Spinward Marches. I also do not like that idea of him being kidnapped as a crew on a merchant ship, I mean what happens when he gets to port to broker the deal and says BTW I am a kidnap victim can you call the port authority to save me.

The teaser is actually a lot better than I was expecting. It's not HBO, but it's far better than the Star Trek fan shows I've seen. I don't think it's at a level where it'll find a general audience, but if it raises the profile of Traveller in the broader geek community, that's a win.

You can't have seen any of the good Star Trek fan shows then. Spinward Traveller looks terribly amateur to me, the Star Trek shows I would call at least 'semi-professional' in quality.

Case in point. http://vimeo.com/66784863

A very credible sequel to the Apollo episode from the original show. MUCH higher quality (near TV production level) than the Trav demo.

Because what Traveller needs is a very British Frenchman as Captain, an obnoxious little kid piloting a giant starship, and the only black guy on the bridge has a ridge down his forehead ... maybe they could get Led Zep to do the sound track, because that is how it would go over.

Well no, actually. If its crap we shouldn't, and we should say so.
T5's almost-instantaneously successful funding is a prime example of how blindly funding something can still produce a really bad product. Unfortunately a good chunk of the Traveller fanbase isn't particularly discerning about the material they acquire.

Maybe people have learned their lesson from that, I don't know. But you're absolutely right - bad product should be shunned, not supported. Funding something just because of the author or because of what it is when you have no idea of the quality or know that it's bad is just throwing money away and is sending the wrong message too.
Could not agree more. Looked at that site and it looks bad. Travellers 3rd Imperium could make great tv and movie material. But it has to be done well if we don;t want to see chances of more being made torpedoed for at least a decade if it tanks. There is no point in blind faith with these things just because it's something rather than nothing.

No; where do you get this from? That isn't how Hollywood works.

... because it's something rather than nothing.
To be correct, it is this or nothing, period. There isn't something else waiting to be made.

After the multi-million dollar trainwrecks that JJ Abrams created with Star Trek I see less problems with a 60-90K demo video to sell the idea for a more lucrative future production and not a bad start considering that little money barely pays to turn on lights or buy donuts.

Could you explain "trainwrecks"?

If you are referring to the 2009 movie "Star Trek" that JJ Abrams directed, IMDb lists 20 awards (including an Oscar) and 53 nominations for awards, a public rating of 8 out of 10 stars, and 83% positive critic reviews ... not to mention almost $400 million in gross revenue.

So how high are you setting the bar?

He took the Star Trek license and created a universe, including physics, that had little to do with Star Trek. Considering the whining on this forum about aspects of Traveller not making sense, I'm amazed more don't point to Abrams' Trek. He went totally Gold Key comics seeming clueless about even the simplest concepts and just making it up as he went. The examples are legion.

If a big production can get it so wrong then a kickstarter for Traveller that sticks truer to the work has my appreciation.

Why are you amazed that people differentiate between game rules they play an RPG with and a movie where it doesn't matter?

Please explain.

I wish them all the luck in the world... they've got some formidable obstacles to climb.
I might even contribute.

My main gripe is... the cast looks rather monochrome. Isn't this 3000 years in the future, the Spinward marches a melting pot of every race culture and creed from not only Earth but Vland and a few "Minor" human races too?

No one from Vland or any other planets answered the casting call. Are you surprised?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh4JbLhH_8w is the kind of quality Star Trek fans can begin to create from very successful KickStarters.

Then, of course, there is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqBfJM ... oYH0WkLpmw which Marc Miller should at least watch just to see how fan shows are done.

We see images of 'races' in Traveller but I always thought 5000 years of humanity intermixing over 11,000 worlds is going to homogenize the gene pool. Unless certain groups go to the trouble to isolate themselves 'to preserve the race', your going to be very similar and even the Zhodani will say 'You all look alike to me.".
