Solomani Confederation: Catalina Spacetime Patrol Ship

The Catalina is named after a rather ubiquitous seaboat from the Great Patriotic War, and while hanging modules from a flying wing sounds functional, the name was chosen more to emphasize it's primary roles, medium range spacetime patrol, and deep space search and rescue. A catamaran configuration being more practical

While performance statistics seem somewhat low, Catalina crews pride themselves on transitioning on a dime, which is far more important in deep space, than high acceleration.

While it's engineered to a low tech level, allowing easy maintenance by most, if not all, of the member polities of the Solomani Confederation, high tech surveillance equipment can be added on, depending on the mission and need.

While using sub hundred tonne modules deprives the Catalina of long range weaponry, it's primary defense is the capability to detect threats early, and transition out of trouble.

Solomani Confederation: Catalina Spacetime Patrol Ship

We've established that the cheapest jump drive is ten tonnes, costs eleven and a quarter million schmuckers, and can transition one hundred and twenty tonnes of volume through the rabbit hole; I'm going to call that the Venture drive.

While hanging modules from a parasol wing sounds interesting, it's not practical for our purposes, and I like the catamaran configuration in any event.

You then mate a ten tonne bridge with the Venture drive; you could do that with a six tonne one, but I can't think it's worth the hassle of minussing dee emms. On the other hand, if the primary hull is sub hnudred tonnes, you could seat yourself comfortably in a six tonne bridge, or if the primary hull was sub fifty tonnes, you could do so in a three tonne bridge.

The difference would all that extra control and monitoring equipment for the jump drive, in which case, how much extra space do they occupy?

You have to add to that fuel that you'd need, basically eleven tonnes, and let's go with three budget Pebble drives for a one hundred twenty tonne thrust. So that's thirty two and a half tonnes.

Power plant is tricky, since it depends on where you're planning to cut corners.

You're going to need twelve scotts for the monojump, and twelve scotts for full thrust; luckily, that's interchangeable.

We have to figure out the size of the primary hull; I've established that thirty five tonnes would be the standard medium sized (smallcraft) hull for the Solomani. But that's too small, especially if you have a ten tonne bridge.

You could have a fifty tonne primary hull, and attach two thirty five tonne secondary hulls to it for a total of one hundred twenty tonnes.

Solomani Confederation: Catalina Spacetime Patrol Ship

With a fifty tone hull, we have seventeen and a half tonnes to spare.

First off, we give them a half tonnes of solar panelling, which is the three quarters equivalent of five tonnes of power planting. You're still going to need two tonnes of power planting, regardless, especially since it's the budget variant.

We can pretty much ignore bunkerage, but that still leaves us with thirty nine tonnes of volume to light up, which comes to seven point eight scotts; let's round it up to eight.

So with constant acceleration, that's a minimum twenty scotts, of which the solar panelling could supply thirty seven and a half scotts, based on an early default fusion plant, though how that works out in the depths of space seems mysterious.

It's an interesting issue whether we should bother to arm the Catalina; if we do, we'd have to give it a turret, because you won't have the agility to manoeuvre a fixed mount onto a target.

The actual crew consists of the pilot, co-pilot, bow turret gunner, flight engineer, radio operator, navigator, radar operator, two waist gunners, ventral gunner; our barebones one would only need the pilot, a gunner, and the flight engineer. Since it's a military craft, it's good practice to have at least two pilots, and since I've stated Catalina's tend to be highly accurate where they exit, a separate navigator specialist.

Solomani Confederation: Catalina Spacetime Patrol Ship

So we have seventeen tonnes left over.

Our crew is going to total five: pilot, co-pilot, sensor/communications officer, flight engineer, and gunner/redshirt.

They're going to need some form of accommodations, so let's give them a four tonne brig; it has a curtained fresher and six pull down slabs beds. Life support costs two hundred fifty schmuckers per tonne, so that's a straight out thousand schmuckers for five crew plus one passenger.

That leaves us with thirteen tonnes cargo.

Solomani Navy: Ship Classifications

Unless this issue with the range of smallcraft missiles and torpedoes gets revised, which I don't foresee, I think that every vessel under hundred tonnes can't actually be a pure bomber.

Light Attack Craft

A small smallcraft, usually below twenty tonnes.

Fighter bomber

Medium fighter, which for the Solomani means thirty five tonne hull; one or both firmpoints is equipped with missiles.

Dive bomber

Ortillery delivery platform; medium fighter hull.

Close Aerospace Support

More of a role, than an actual craft, though some are optimized for it; streamlined.

Torpedo bomber

Medium fighter hull; torpedo delivery platform.

Light Bomber

Fifty tonne bay, either missiles or torpedoes.

Medium Bomber

Hundred tonne bay, either missiles or torpedoes

Heavy bomber

Five hundred tonne bay, either missiles or torpedoes.

Strategic bomber

Jump capable weapons platform, five hundred tonne bay, either missiles or torpedoes.

Solomani Confederation: Catalina Spacetime Patrol Ship

In order to attach two thirty five modules, you either make them breakaways, or add docking clamps, which would have to be Solomani specific optimized to attach thirty five ton volumes:

Solomani Docking Clam Type II
. Volume
.. one and a quarter tonnes
. Cost
.. three quarters of a million schmuckers
. Capacity
.. thirty seven and a half tonnes

If you use the breakaway option, you'd be devoting four percent of the volume to support two secondary hulls, which would eight point four tonnes, and have to have a complete set of components in each hull; the advantage would be that you could distribute power and manoeuvre drives out, and I think streamlining is not an issue, but it looks like it would cost more. That doesn't mean you could attach secondary modules without those components, even if it isn't mentioned as an option in High Guard.

Solomani Navy: Significant Displacements

Hundred thousand tonnes

Why bother to build (major combatant) hulls under this?

Five thousand (and one) tonnes

You have to have ships to train all those ace capital ship helmsmen.

One thousand nine hundred and ninety nine to two thousand tonnes

Immune to both spinal mounts, and critical hits from turrets and barbettes

Two hundred tonnes

Ten tonne bridges. And jump factor one by the smallest default jump drive.

Thirty five to thirty seven tonnes

Medium sized smallcraft.

Ten to fifteen tonnes

Light smallcraft.

1. The docking clamps will have integrated airlock versions, comparable in size; in other words, Type V will probably be twenty tonne cargo airlock.

Solomani Navy: Standard Aerospace Fighter, or If at first you don't succeed, Tri, Tri again

Moving beyond the TIE Fighter, which may be just too Star Wars, as if the Star Destroyer configurations of their major combatants weren't, the Solomani standard aerospace fighter is the Tri Fighter, built with three Aerofins, which will give it a dee emm of three to all pilot checks within an atmosphere.

Is this plausible? Why not, you don't really need the wings for lift, and the larger versions embed solar panelling in the wings, allowing an almost continuous flow of energy regardless which way it's pointing, except at night.

Are you sure saying there are three makes the bonus into a +3?

I read the Aerofins section to mean they give a +2 regardless, you add or don't add them. It is an upgrade not a single fin. But maybe I am missing something. :|

Plausibility Factor? In other words, House Rules. Not a bad thing, but it helps me follow what you are doing when you are clear about the things you are editing or making up vs using rules found in the book. :D

Anyway, back to your navy creations.

Most of the stuff about the Solomani that I write about is speculative.

Which is fine, since it's an exercise to make them more efficient than the Imperium, despite being a tech level down.

Starships: Engineering and the Dawn of the Interstellar Age

The Venture engine was not the first jump drive the Solomani developed, that honour goes to the early prototype Quest, though much of the technology was certainly derived from it.

Doctor Jon Venture is credited with developing the initial prototype, and after his untimely death, his brother Theodore took over the project; while not being to fix it's rather underpowered performance, he did manage to bring the manufacturing cost to almost one seventh of the prototype, making it the cheapest jump drive available on the market.

While the underpowered aspect remains a prominent feature of the Venture engine, and while subsequent models have been able to make improvements in other performance aspects, starships with it installed are restricted to monojumps.

Starships: Engineering and the Venture Drive

I've always tinkered around trying to find the smallest jump drive, since it's very much linked into designing the smallest and cheapest possible starship.

The smallest one, a high technology model now weighing in at seven tonnes at fifteen and three quarters megaschmuckers, is just a tad more expensive than the standard one, plus three tonnes to spare. But this is available only at technological level twelve, and you're limited to monojumps, which might be interesting for middling freetraders, if you can monetize that extra space; if you wanted to use it for a hundred tonne hull for bijumping, you'd need it to be manufactured at technological level fourteen.

The smallest hull size that can transition remains at a hundred tonne, and the smallest default size of jump drive is ten tonnes.

So you're going to need increasingly sophisticated repair facilities to maintain the miniaturized engines, though technological level twelve should be standard at most starports.

Technological level nine should be possible at all starports.

So we move on from sophistication, to budget travel.

If you're willing to take a hit on performance, for the same tonnage you'll have a drive that will push one hundred twenty tonnes into another universe, and hopefully, out of it again; but, at eleven and a quarter megaschmuckers, it likely is the cheapest jump drive under the current rules, and at technological level nine, any drive engineer probably could maintain, and possible repair it with minimal facilities.

While one hundred twenty tonnes seems odd, and a little distant from the optimized two hundred tonne hull, it's also a unique size, and therefore characteristic of the Solomani, and ideally suited as a short range despatch ship.

If you incorporate Interstellar Wars, the Venture can shift two hundred sixty tonnes within a quarter parsec.
