How many of you play Traveller - or Stars Without Number for that matter - with miniatures?
Those who do so - which scale do you use? (15mm, 28mm or other?)? Any tips to someone who wargames and wants to use miniatures in Traveller as well?

I kept the ones released eventually alongside the star wars d20 system admittedly didn't bother collecting the more expensive starship game they released.
Now all i hope my mum doesn't give them away to my nephew whilst my back is turned!

I use some plastic toy soldiers I bought from a pound shop for well... £1.
A friend of mine painted different patterns on each soldier's helmet.

Re: Traveller and Miniatures
I have a few of the metal traveller minis including all the non-human races. We mostly use the starwars minis for humans.
Re: Traveller and Miniatures
We use minis - 25/28mm scale. Having said that, because my campaigns tend to be pretty light on combat, they're more for atmosphere than use as game counters.

- Here's one of my group's hiver PCs, exploring an alien ecosystem. Painting by yours truly. The miniature is from the old Grenadier official Traveller aliens boxed set (now a rare and expensive eBay purchase).

Wow, first I was impressed with the fine details in the paint job. Then the composition of the photo blew me away.
Well done and thank you for posting. I feed it to my 'Blackhole of Quality' (TM) as soon as I was saw it.

Travellers: they'll break you ship and then ruin your best laid plans.
Re: Traveller and Miniatures
I've used minis. Overall I think 15mm is the best way to go, but I have such an extensive 25mm collection that I've never made the jump. I even have some 25mm resin vehicles.
If starting from scratch for Traveller specifically (not some other game like Star Wars that has a huge line of 25mm), I would go with 15mm. They cost less and your starship maps can be printed much smaller. If you paint them though they are kind of a pain in the arse. Invest in a lighted lamp with a magnifier before you go blind.
If you want to go cheap and don't want to purchase minis, consider printing your own flat, round, tokens. There is free software out there that requires no skill to make and print out tokens on cardstock. Mount them upon poker chips, metal washers, etc. and they are quite nice to use. You can take images from the internet to make them since they are only for personal use. With some talent you could even make some face tokens look like your PCs using real photos.
I also have made flat, cheap vehicles by printing on cardstock. They work better then the expensive resin since you can physically place your minis upon them to show who is the driver, who is in the gunner's seat, etc.

Re: Traveller and Miniatures
I have 2 hiver mini's but mine are white primed metal. I'm never going to paint them because my painting skills aren't even close to yours, and I would just ruin their value.

Re: Traveller and Miniatures
That's very kind of you to say so Burocrate. I can take credit for the painting, but the photo was taken by my wife. (It's her PC too.) The alien landscape is our back garden.
And since you were so grateful, here's a K'kree, an Ael Yael and a Virushi...

Paint them anyway!Jak Nazryth wrote:I have 2 hiver mini's but mine are white primed metal. I'm never going to paint them because my painting skills aren't even close to yours, and I would just ruin their value.
As someone who buys a lot of "previously owned" miniatures off of ebay for various games, I can tell you that the value won't really drop. The funny thing with metal minis is that they'll keep their value even if you paint them ... as long as you strip them of paint before you sell them.

In 15mm, as the largest selection of Traveller Miniatures are 15mm still. Heck the largest selection of SF Miniatures are 15mm.
The Citadel/RAFM Traveller License figures are available here: http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant. ... _Code=GRAV
Then Ground Zero Games has a large selection of very Traveller-esqe Vehicles.
Air/Raft for example.

I chose 15mm because I wanted to be able to do the running gun fight into the ship on the table top which can be done with 15mm figures but not larger figures....
