Non-Nobles in Nobility career
How often have you generated characters in the Nobility career that didn't have noble social standing? I thought it was kind of cool this can happen, like a 7 SOC character being allowed in and maybe gaining some SOC in the process.

A couple of times, and sure it's cool, but the characters never seemed very well suited to crewing a starship.ShawnDriscoll wrote:How often have you generated characters in the Nobility career that didn't have noble social standing? With a character like this, I think I'd take the Yacht, hire a small crew and fit it out as a very exclusive travelling casino.

That's a pretty good version of Cy Tolliver (from seasons 2 & 3 of Deadwood). Nice.Greylond wrote:Ok, here's one that I rolled up. Came out rather well IMO...

Alternatively - he should steer clear of high stakes games against hotshot Corellian smugglers if he wants to hold on to his yacht...

Re: Non-Nobles in Nobility career
My computer just rolled a noble character that was kicked out because of a family scandal (a drop in SOC). He then gets drafted into the Navy as a Flight specialist guy at 26. Starting as a crewman, he eventually leaves the Navy as an admiral at age 54. He's an Archduke (SOC 16).
I need to keep this one.

Very cool sounding character. IMO, This is why random chargen is so great.

Speaking as a frustrated writer, there's little I like more than crafting backstories around the crazy mix of stuff you get from random chargen.Greylond wrote:Very cool sounding character. IMO, This is why random chargen is so great.
Re: Non-Nobles in Nobility career
A long time ago, mid-80s, I read commentary about RPG GMs saying that GMs are mostly just frustrated writers. Can't remember who said that but I always loved that comparison. And yea, to me randomness is a fun journey.

Hmm. Sounds like a passable description of me when I was a GM back in the '80s...ShawnDriscoll wrote:The GMs I knew in the '80s were horrible actor want-a-bees

I forgot about the SOC boost a character gets when becoming a General. Went from Social Standing 3 to 10. Pretty cool.

To be honest, never tried, but if you roll a 10 or higher, you would get into a noble career, even with a low SOC.
I suppose that in the Imperium the noblity are a kind of civil service, so the appointment of the odd social mis-fit, or perhaps by-blow of a noble family, can be easily accomodated.

Re: Non-Nobles in Nobility career
I would make non-nobles able to enter the Administrator or Diplomat paths out of the core book (I don't have Dillettante yet) as those are more likely to accept smart or slick-tongued commoners in.ShawnDriscoll wrote:How often have you generated characters in the Nobility career that didn't have noble social standing?
