A free 12 page supplement that looks in detail at TL 8 and 9 vacc suits. Although it can be used with any Traveller setting, it was written for my TL9 solar system Traveller book called Orbital (out January).

SWEET!

I have always thought that the Vacc Suit in Traveller got a bit of a short shift. Considering the history of the 3I, there should be ALL KINDS of vacc suits.

Looking forward to reading this, as I saw Zozer's Outpost Mars a day or to ago and ordered the POD edition (which arrived this morning and, on first glance, lloks rather intriguing.). It'll be interesting to see how the technology will have moved on from Outpost's 2040 to the 2100 timeframe for the Orbital book.

Thanks everyone ... it's tricky getting the balance between NOW and the Traveller far future that TL 9 requires.

Regarding contemporary space suit technology, have a look at http://mvl.mit.edu/EVA/biosuit/ which is also on display at the V&A until January - perhaps there'll be a surge of gamers visiting the V&A later this month/early December (Dragonmeet). There was also a documentary on Channel 4 ages ago; EQUINOX: Spacesuit, produced by Uden Associates for Channel4, transmitted August 25th, 1991.

Regarding Mars itself, Paul mentions Robert Zubrin's fiction, but his day job is as an engineer and has been advocating a Mars mission for many years;

Selected Robert Zubrin bibliography;
- The Case for Mars (ISBN-13: 978-0684835501)
- How to Live on Mars (ISBN-13: 978-0307407184 or Amazon Kindle)
- Entering Space: Creating a Spacefaring Civilization (ISBN-13: 978-1585420360)

Finally, and closer to home, there's Voyage by Stephen Baxter (ISBN-13: 978-000648037 or Amazon Kindle)

'How To Live on Mars' I have and read, but it reads as a weary anti-NASA tract, which sort of put me off Zubrin quite a bit. I have read about his ideas, concepts and proposals though.

Actually you know, I made a mistake. I wanted Orbital to be TL 9, no more, but I'd already set Outpost Mars at TL 9 even though the former is in 2100 and the latter is in 2040. Looking back I should and could have left Outpost Mars at TL 8 with no problem whatsoever...but that's hindsight. I may edit the Outpost Mars PDF when Orbital comes out to reflect that.

I only went and misread the dates, skipping the (October) 2011 to (January) 2012. Doh!

Ah thanks for the link! I decided not to include the 'skinsuit' design, it seemed to high tech, more TL 12 than TL 9! :)

Just wait till you see the cool Venus "skin suits" he's developing. Made out of recycled underwear waistbands and old bottle caps. It's TL7.
