There's a place on the internet for this kind of thing - http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/MGT-Aids/

IIRC, Marc Miller's lawyers have been aiming to bring the wrath of litigation down anybody who makes those. Something about overzealous copyright protection. (My dad once nearly fell afoul of them)
ImpReg: Ship Design: Section VI: Sub-Section 2: Item 2: All Ships must carry a minimum of one (1) Coffee Maker per Crewstation.

Well, character generation is likely a big „DON'T" since it removes much of the „need rules book(s)" element

Some minor tools like a trader aid might work since they need book data. Best get either Mongoose or FFE to host/distribute them, that should take care off the Legal Beagles

Bonus points if the tools work on Win7/Win8 tablets or (F)Android systems(phone or tablet)

I'm no lawyer, but what of an app that only included the material in in the SRD? Surely that couldn't be hit for copyright reasons, if only because it's already publicly available!

As for platforms to build it for, I'd vote for platform independence. No Flash, no Silverlight, and probably not even Java, honestly. Server-side the whole operation.

There's an accu-mentored-developers project starting on JavaScript. Don't know for definite yet but it might be suitable for running Traveller helper apps in a web browser.

In the beginning there was Traveller (mid-70s till forever).

Then the sun broke on the shores revealing a new age, Mongoose Traveller (released 2008).

Discussions began about making software for Traveller...

And the Gawds that be declared "it is written upon the license software there shall not be allowed"

And all was silent.

(taking some fun with this, but the early response from Matt Sprange was no software was allowed per the license - but check the developer's kit or email Matt )

Say what's that, a new game? M-U-S-T   B-U-Y G-A-M-E!

lf you do it as a Webthingy (there are pros and cons for that) this does not rule out JAVA. 0n the contrary - tons of good frameworks to build easily maintained Webstuff with JAVA like Wicket, Spring MVC+jQuery, GWT,...

Marc's generally pretty relaxed about non-commercial apps for earlier editions. Mongoose are less relaxed about theirs, and if you want to sell it get a licence.
