[Spoiler warning] Questions about Chirpers

Postby Thile » Sat Jan 07, 2012 1:21 am

From what I understand, Chirpers look like immauture and somewhat of primitive Droyne (almost like the Cro magnon does to the Homo sapiens). But does people in general know that Chirpers are just droyne that has not Casted yet?

Does the Droyne know?

If so, why do the Droyne not just find Chirper worlds/population and start with the caste ritual?

I don't know but I would be incline ot put in a potential spoiler alert for ther newbies.

As for your question. It was my understanding that chirper are rarely seen and generally speaking unknown. And, again, generally speaking people mistake them for a different type of alien that happen to somewhat ressemble Droyne. Some probably posited that they may be distant relatives (including the Droyne more then likely). Without realising how closely related they truly are.

As for the second part. It would be risky. If they were to 'Caste' the Chirper: True they would have a huge population boom, but also a huge social conflict would arise between 'pure' Droyne and 'evolved' Chirper. Nobody loves an upstart.

Done, sorry. It was very late when I posted that last night.

True. Thanks

Still, they are alien and does not think like us, and if said Chirpers would be droyn-isezed, then they would not cause such of a boom as they live on another world than the droyne.

But still, maybe.

Each Droyne world reacts to Chirpers differently. Some ignore, some study, some protect, and some, on the fringes, may exterminate. Droyne are not cookie-cutter about this.

As many Droyne worlds are fairly sedate and isolationist, they aren't necessarily going to know that there are Chirpers nearby. Chirpers are also better at hiding than most Droyne precisely because they have no civilization: no structures, no power sources, and the same racial invisibility the Droyne have. Chirper populations could go undiscovered even on a populous world as long as it lacks electronic surveillance in the places they go.

Also, I suspect that a combination of the Droyne worlds not knowing their own racial history (the Secret of the Ancients is not general knowledge to them), and those that do know that secret also knowing more about casting than we, the game playing observers, do, may lead to them either not thinking about it, or being sufficiently unsure about the results that they don't want to risk it.

I think at least the spacefaring Droyne communities are aware
of the fact that Chirpers are their relatives and know the nearby
planets where Chirpers live. Their science and technology are
good enough to make it almost impossible to miss these facts.
If so, why do the Droyne not just find Chirper worlds/population and start with the caste ritual?
Droyne tend to see themselves as servants of their specific com-
munity, and normally show little interest in the affairs of other
communities. Therefore even spacefaring Droyne communities
are quite likely to ignore each other, and even more so all the
non-Droyne communities, whether Human or Chirper.

I believe the old CT book Alien Adventures contained a chapter where high tech Dryone visit the Churpers on Vanjeen to 'save' them or 'up lift' them.
Travellers: they'll break you ship and then ruin your best laid plans.

Would this be the same as the CT "Secret of the Ancients"? I don't recall "alien adventures", but it's been a while. Another fun source is the GURPS Traveller alein sourcebook. They have an awesome section about Droyne/Chirper and the Ancients...which was pretty instructive.

And both of these source can be adapted to this version fairly easily.

Not really the same, a lot more interactive then the original. Available as a free campaign downloadable from Mongoose Publishing if you wanted to look it over.

The adventure is called 'The Casteless' and is designed for Droyne PCs. Without giving too much away, they are aiming for a specific Chirper village because the Chirpers in it are different from the other Chirpers on Vanajen (that bit is in the player intro, so it's not really a spoiler). It looks like a good little adventure.

Alien Realms was a book of adventures where the players played specific species - there is one Imperial, one Zhodani, two Vargr, three Aslan and one Droyne adventure in the book.

I was wondering about this sort of thing as well, specifically would just giving Chirpers coyns cause them to start casting (the ones of the right age of course) or would they need instruction? I am pretty sure it is the latter but coyns are something special so I would not rule out the former. The problem is of course that I have not read anything about them in years.

I have a scenario idea involving chirpers so have been thinking about them, time to read the old books as well I think.

They will need instruction. Actually a bunch of Drone caste droyne use their psionic abilities to help judge the droyne / chirpers underrgoing the ritual, and from various readings they can tweak the choice of coyns drawn to channel an individual into one of the castes.

Various books have mentioned the ritual must happen at a certain age (+/- a year or so). After that, the young can't caste and undergo the biological changes necessary to evolve into one of the 6 droyne castes.

I do have the Mongoose version of 'Secret of the Ancient', But I was wondering if "Alien realms" (That's the proper title not alien adbventures) was the same or similar to the old GWD 'Secret of the Ancients' which I have. 95% of my traveller stuff is the Classic GWD version with a bit of GURPS stuff and some B5 (Trav.) stuff + 'Secret of the Ancients' from Mnogoose.

I will have to get my hand on Alien Realms since it does sound very interesting.

Good luck trying to get a printed copy. You can buy a PDF copy at drivethrurpg (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_i ... s_id=80201) - and I imagine it's on the Classic Traveller CD from Far Futures (http://www.farfuture.net/).

I do have that CD, so I'm going ot have to take a look if it's there. If not there's a Fine copy on eBay for 30$ and a VG+ copy on Noble kngiht for 45$...or as you Indicated, drivethruRPG is also a great place to look.

edit:
The Grandfather World (I think that's the name) article in Challenge magazine 27, could alos be a good little source for info. I need to reread it though to make sure.

Well I got the PDF version on the CD as stated. The hard copy. Noble Knights has one, so it's always an option.

And I also got the Challenge magazine 27. So I have in hand all the Classic traveller Dryone/Chirper source I think.

There was some Droyne material in Third Imperium: http://www.travellermap.com/thirdimperium/ including a ship and an adventure.

In the TNE timeline some Droyne are using Coins to uplift oppressed Chirpers on a Teddy world. So at least some Droyne know what Chirpers are.
